Does anyone know if the M-Tron discs are stricly software based (i.e., CuBase) or are they compatible with a sampler (e.g., AKAI CD3000i)?

Frank,

M-tron is a VST plugin usable with any software package that directly
suipports VST. To use it you will need a PC with Cubase or equivilent.

Frank,

The sample sets only work with the M-tron instrument which is a VST plugin so you will need a VST host such as Cubase to run it. In theory it should work with Cakewalk if you use a VST wrapper although I have yet to get this to work. I have used it as an M400 substitute by using the demo of Cubase (save is disabled). I confess, I have also used it at my mate's studio as he is Cubase based and it saved me lugging my M400 nearly 100 miles for a session.

Regards,
Norm

PS: the Mellotron they sampled was pretty worn out as in some cases my real M400 sounds better than the sampled one!

Oops, I didn't realize that, unlike other Yahoo groups, the default
reply address is the poster's email address. No wonder my posts
never take!

Anyway, M-Tron can also be used on a Mac, as can Cubase. The latest
library has samples of Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock's MkII. Overall, the
samples don't sound as good as the samples I just finished making of
my brand new Streetly tapes :), but they sound fine in a recording
with other instruments and a little reverb. They are probably the
best commercially available samples.

I think they sound a bit naff because they were sampled from
Radioohead's shagged-out M400. Have they had it serviced yet
Martin?..... I could put in a word....

Is that the M400 that the M-Tron folks claim was owned by an East
German spy? Maybe there are secret messages on the tapes?!!

I was under the impression that they sampled at least three Trons;
maybe more. And one (snicker) Birotron.

Snicker-Birotron?... Did they change the name of this obscure
instrument?... Was it once known as the Marathtron?

Mattias,

I believe it was played by a trumpet, a trombone, a wobbly tenor sax and
three old ladies from Lawrence Welk's
violin section. How Banks got them into that little box, we haven't been
able to figure out yet.

It sounded like shit, it was *very* poorly implemented, it had crap
recordings to start with (mostly) and had no real industry 'back up'.

Hi Mattias, again!

Waiting with bated breath to hear the answer to your Birotron question.

Also rumor has it that A. will be playing the states again. If you all
manage to make your way to Los Angeles, let it be known that the same three
Mellotrons are still working well <hint hint>. Oh yes, many other
instruments also... and our living room still has no furniture... we have
sleeping bags...

Best Regards,

hey hey !

Have you still got the original boys choir ?....It´s one of my favorite memories from the first progfest....And we thought the trumpet sounded a bit tired and odd.....

Glad to see that noone replied seriously to the Watcher of the skies thing....The list is in good health...

Concerning the Birotron thing...Does it sound similar to a Orchestron....?

// Mattias

And yes....I´ll be in Los Angeles in March....Definitely a good time for buzzing and humming....I am picking up an Optigan so I might need some tech-help...Thinking about doing some kind of Choptigan operation...I think Jordrök really should have benefited from using maybe theOPtigan disc Organ sing-along instead of that Churchorgan ( Worlds biggest accordion 1993 )...

A bit harsh but sadly not far from the truth. In terms of implementation
the Dave Biro original used discrete auto 8-track players, (so subsequently
was huge) and sounded OK. A bright engineer (who shall remain
nameless) suggested making it smaller by mounting the 8 -tracks
vertically on a common frame - only after this design decision was taken
did someone dig out the BS (British Standards) documents for 8-track cartridges
and players - they were not intended to be played vertically, hence some
horrible
tracking and tape jamming problems.

<Sigh>.

The crap recordings were probably a result of the limited industry 'back up',
(manual fading between two tape loops - resulting in some interesting
audio effects) the whole thing was being done on a shoestring budget (and I
mean shoestring
even in terms of the industry at the time) and being involved in building
the darned
things I know how hard a couple of us (more dedicated) engineers struggled
to make
a silk purse out of a pig's ear. With hindsight it was probably doomed to
failure,
but at least we had some fun.

I still intend to restore a Birotron - more for interest and maybe a
Machiavellian sense
of fun, than to produce a useable, playable, instrument. Unless of course
there is
anyone UK based on the list that would be reckless enough to try one on
stage :-)

Sorry Colin, I did it again!

The Birotron Samples in M-Tron sound muffled. Martin tells me that
it was in pretty poor condition when the M-Tron folks sampled it.

I think using 35 8-track tape decks is just one step beyond using 35
turntables.

Choir, organ, strings and woodwind. There's also Chamberlin harp (2
sounds) and solo female voice. In all, there are more than 70 sample
banks. You can find lists of all the samples and some pictures here:

Normally I'd agree, but knowing the Birotron folks, they'd probably have
put the turntables vertical with results equally as bad as 8-track tapes
playing vertically. (see my posting of 04/01/03).

Mind you, vertical turntables didn't hinder

Sorry to be a pest.

I was on GForce's website. There is no "demo" to download and play
with, but there are a few mp3s that I listened to (repeatedly). They
are now including the extra 3 tape sets, so there are about 100 sounds
to play with. I have only read about some of the rhythms, etc., but
this thing's got lots of cool sounds!!!

I might buy it.
