Unbelievably, I still don't have any MP3-WAV (& vice versa) conversion software on my PC. Can anyone recommend someting good, and free? I've been to download.com, but the choice is bewildering.

Andy,

I use Musicmatch. They have a free version and one for $20 which gives
you more features. Here's the link:

I use this with decent results. It's not free, but it's not expensive either.
Regards and Happy Holidays!

There's absolutely no need to pay for MP3 software. The cream of the crop
is found in the freeware realm. Here's what you want:

Ripper/Encoder combo. I use EAC (uses LAME 3.92 as encoder). Go to the
"download" section for the latest version -->
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

dbPowerAMP is also an excellent ripper/encoder that uses LAME 3.92. It
has the advantaage that it installs as a "right-click" Windwos Explore
function.  Get it from -->
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

If you're like me and do a lot of stuff in "batch" mode then get the
RazorLame front-end. Enable the histogram and watch the encode process -->
http://www.dors.de/razorlame/source.html

For playback I use Winamp3. It can also be used to edit the ID3 tags. Go
to the home page -->
http://www.winamp.com/

Suggested settings for very high grade VBR MP3s using the LAME encoder -->
-b 128 -m j -h -p -V 0 -B 320 --lowpass 19.7 -q 0. This will give you a
minimum frame setting of 128kbps, with the encoder dynamically using up to
320kbps for music that needs the extra bits to accurately represent it.
The lowpass filter setting will ensure that the high-end fidelity of the
audio doesn't get whacked. Quality will be the highest possible for MP3.
  Enjoy!

Any questions, email me.

I am losing my taste for software like this -- the stuff that's pretty much
commercial stuff, "free" for the basic version, and tied to a web site.

Why? Have you used the RealONE software, from our friends at
Real.com? It's little more than a virus that plays RA files in the way
that it puts extra programs on your machine that contact the 'net on a
regular basis for who knows what. What else does it do? I don't know,
it's gone from my machines, so I don't care. (See "Rndal" on
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_r.htm for more about
this.)

If you need to play RA, check out http://www.oldversion.com for the old
RealPlayer.

OBTron: I listened to the first track of Kitaro's "Ancient" with only half
an ear, but did I hear 'tron buried in there?

Look through www.versiontracker.com as you should encounter what you want.

Hello,
Here's a link to 30 converters. One is free and the others are very reasonable. I have a good one on my home PC also, but I am on the road presently and can't remember the name of it. I will get it to you after the 30th.
If the link doesn't work go to www.zdnet.com and search for "audio converters".
Happy Holidays to all.
