Rockfour. I was just listening to a song of theirs called "Superman". Do any
of you like this song or have any details about it? It has a haunting,
mournful mellotron in the background used to excellent effect.

<< This track comes from a CD entitled "Supermarket" which was released in
Israel about three years ago. It features a MKII mellotron throughout which
previously belonged to Pink Floyd and before that, Judie Tzuke's dad. The
album is very retro and melodically strong - something that's missing more
and more these days. >>

I remember banging on about this lot a few months ago; all but two of their
albums are sung in their mother tongue (and the jewel boxes for the cd's are
assembled in reverse....).
in fact, some sort of repackaging of "supermarket" and the later title "one
fantastic day" happened and resulted in "another beginning" (with almost
identical artwork to "1fd") which is the title that's most widely available
in the UK and US. there's less evidence of the mighty 'tron on the earlier
titles, and a different style, with a female vocal here and there. can't read
the sleevenotes...
(judie tzuke's dad? I have, prepare to be astonished, quite a few of judie's
albums; she's one of those great voices....)

I asked their webmaster/online cd salesperson "why the low profile in UK?"
and now I've got the older titles, I understand. must've been a wrench for
them to switch to english, though I can't comment on how it's affected their
lyrical quality. maybe I'll get paul kaye to have a listen.
the album /is/ quite retro, and very tuneful- it put me in mind of 69-70
moodies, floyd of about the same period, xtc, vanilla fudge... jellyfish,
even.

so. "another beginning" is the easiest one to find, and has the best bits of
"supermarket" and "1fd" and some new material, 13 tracks + a hidden
knockabout at the end (when oh when are bands going to grow out of this?).
loads of 'tron and rickenbacker. rainbow quartz is the label. top notch.

And don't forget, we have a submission to the "Mellotron Project" CD from
Zohar Cohen, playing this black, ex-Pink Floyd MKII (which he owns). The
tune "The Awakening" also features Noam Rapoport of Rockfour playing strings
and flutes on the same MKII.

Here's a link to the area on my website where the tune can be heard
(available in Real Audio and MP3 format).

And for those who were wondering, yes, the project is still *on*, it's just
in hibernation until I receive some more tunes. In the meantime, you can
listen to what's out there on the web site.

Now that I have Russian Choir, Half Speed Brass, Ian McDonald Flutes and Rick
Blechta French Horns in my arsenal, I may be inspired to do something myself
;-).

MKII #247 (help, I've got Rick Blechta French Horns in my arse(nal)! )

Judie Tzuke was great. I remember seeing her "live" several times in the early 1980s. Mellotron 300 supremo Woolly Wolstenholme's band "Maestoso" also acted as support on one of her early tours. I saw them at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester. Judie used a Mellotron on the title-track of "Under the Angels" in 1996. Aidan
