Some interesting clips.

A Mellotron? I think he had his Birotrons by now...?
(had he burned his Mellotrons by this time? ;)

Sorry to contribute an answer this late - been away from the computer / (Earth Day)

He was using both Mellotron and Birotron around then. The one in the video is the Double Mellotron (two M400 Mellotrons put together to make a sort of "prototype MK V" in 73)

Birotron (production model) wasn't used on recording until 77, but there were some earlier prototypes laying around in 76.

The Mellotron barbecue happened in November 1982 (Guy Fawkes?? Day)

Don't know if I "spelt" that right!

Martin or Andy (Thompson) would know the exact date.

Try again
"Possibly the most famous example of the “tron” sound can be heard in the opening bars of “Strawberry Fields Forever”. This is the classic “tron” strings that is still widely used by artists today."

Well if it's as good as the blurb it will pretty awful, certainly the audiosamples sound pretty poor to me, worse than M-tron and three times the price. #1565 didn't cost much more and even in it's currently crippled state sounds better, playing through a set of computer speakers.
