Benny and the Mellotron

2002-08-28 by dandc74

A while back, we discussed the whereabouts and state of affairs of
the Polar AB Studios 'tron. This made me wonder why "that" sound
isn't on any ABBA recording. Does anyone on our esteemed list know
what sounds Mssr. Andersson used? No evidence of 3-string, flute,
choir, etc. on any ABBA recording I have but it's in the credits.....

(no 'tron yet but with 16,000 records, I even have that Barry
What's-his-name around here somewhere!)

Listen to the intro on "The Name of the Game" and tell us what you think...3 violins?

I am sure that the 'flute' is featured on Another Town, Another Train
on the Abba album Ring Ring. Aidan

Definitely used on the 'Ring Ring' and 'Waterloo' albums (about four tracks
on the latter, but no singles).

Didn't someone here mention that Benny's Mellotron is still festering
away in Polar Studios?

Last I heard. I *think* the story was to do with Anglagard, when they were
trying to find their own machine in the early '90s, but Polar weren't
interested in letting it go.

Strings and flute on the 'Waterloo' LP.

You make my 2500 collection look puny. :-(

Gents,

Very well then, I guess I need to go back and listen to those early
LP's and see what I hear (or hear what I hear).

As far as "The Name of the Game" goes, I've often wondered if
3-string appears as the high sustain during the chorus but I haven't
timed it to see if it beats the 8-second clock. It could be though
in the intro but it's as Mssr. Anderson did the opposite of what we
strive to do to obtain "that" sound...EQ-ing it so it is less
plaintive and more dark and subdued.

Now if the Polar 'tron ended up in my living room.......pinch me, I'm
dreaming again!

Thanks all....
