Chamberlin Rivera for sale

Re: [Mellotronists] Chamberlin Rivera for sale

2007-11-05 by Mark Pring

Probably talking to myself here, or at least I am
replying to myself!

I know a bit more about this now, there were 2 made
but the photo of the other one had pedals as well. I
assume this would costs $20-30000 or more. I
understand they had 1 inch 8 track tapes without a
cycling system so presumably it might work and be
fairly "reliable". Anyone know more or played one?

I saw photos of an M400 that had the 4 keyboards but a
different cabinet and ,i think, no foot pedals. The
Mellotron book has a good picture of the Riviera and
says that Harry owned one personnaly. I hdan'y
responded because it hurts too much to think about
it-4 keyboards!!!! So much money so much maintanence!!

Re: [Mellotronists] Chamberlin Rivera for sale

2007-11-05 by Chris Dale

It's basically 4 M1 units in a box. I think the M1 units are just as reliable as M400's providing they are properly adjusted. They are similar enough to the M400, but not exactly the same as there is an allan screw adjustment as well.

So this machine would be fairly reliable, compared to some of the older cycling machines, though with enough love and care anything can be made to work.

Re: [Mellotronists] Chamberlin Rivera for sale

2007-11-06 by Mattias

I have played it at the Bomb factory.  David Kean showed us around the place and it was a head spinning experience. Seeing Raymond Scotts Clavivoz and all...

But I think it was hearing and playing a MK II (the #123 ?) for the first time and being blown away by that and then...hearing the Riviera. The Riviera sounds and looks incredible.  It made the MK II sound tinny and and extremely un musical...

Thanks Mattias, if it sounds as good as it looks it

OK then, I've made up my mind. Chamberlin Riviera or nothing. I always knew the Mark II was garbage. I also know that my M-400s were less than that.........

I'm going for the Riviera. I'm going to offer $1000.00. I dare anyone to beat this offer.

No false promises, I might well up the offer to as much as $1,800.00, so don't mess with me.

Then MkII #240 must have still been there as well (before Erik sold it).

You didn't offend anyone.  Well, hopefully not unless we have some over sensitive souls tuning in.  The MKII can sound thin in it's raw state and Harry's recordings are gorgeous at times.  Character is the the issue here................

Do you not like Chamberlins? I have never seen or
played one and have only heard them on Richard
Thompson and Harry Nilsson CDs. The sound certainly is
different but not in a way I can easily explain, I
really like it but if offered a choice between a
chamberlin and a tron would take the tron, unless of
course it was the rivera/riviera in which case I would
play it continuously for several months and then sell
it to buy an M5000!

see the link below

It's probably just a matter of practice!

Greetings Gang,  Been reading the latest posts, incl. the critique
of "Epsilon" (Ypsilon ) and the above. Incl.  the offensive
comments  from FS-VA.  Go easy on the caffeine, will 'ya Frank ?

Anyway, I have the orig. LP version of Ypsilon from the 70's.
As Ken Leonard indicated, it's mostly Tron on that version.
Not exactly a top-seller, but more an experiment with that instrument.
Much like some of the  Berlin-School copycat stuff heard on Starstreams.
.....it is what is is (was).....

I first heard/saw a Chamberlin (M1) at Pierre Veilleux's Montreal
apartment in 1997.  WOW ! was my first inpression . Later again in
2000 at Toronto, when Chris Dale brought his M1 to the Workshop.

....Finally, in 2006 , Ken/I  saw/heard the   Music Master 600 in Boston.
Chamberlins'  sound quality is quite nice.    Original recordings plus the
high-qual. heads were a great combo.   However the 600's pkg'g. left much
to be desired. The M1 was designed as well as it could be for the time.
The Riviera will hopefully make a wonderful addition to someone's
collection/studio ....Add some more zeroes to that $1800.00 figure , FS-VA.

Mark, I don't believe that I ever again want to read anything containing
a sentence reading "At that point he gave up the stage and went back to
baking, and let his rectum content itself with more conventional
pursuits.", thank you very much.

Personally, I love the sounds of a Chamberlin. I have never heard what comes out of a Riviera, but If I had to hazard a guess, I would think the sounds would be wonderful. To see the beauty of the cabinet itself and knowing that Harry built it originally for himself I would have to think that it would play very well indeed.

I also am a big fan of the M1 and would love to own one.

'Nilsson Schmilsson' and 'Pussy Cats'. Or were they actually Chamby?

I am probably wrong, I thought my info came from your
site and having just checked, can see that it didn't,
however flutes on moonbeam song do sound different to
me, but then again I haven't got great ears, I had
never noticed that the tron voice on Badge was
mandolin!

Okay, so he's socially clumsy AND has poor math skills. Like it or not,
he's still a part of the family...

And speaking of 2600's, mine is almost finished being freshly Cirocco-ized,
and I can't wait to set it up on the Morazotron and have some fun!
