OT - Multi-tier stand recommendations?

OT - Multi-tier stand recommendations?

2007-10-05 by guybrush03

I'm guessing most of us on this group deal with the same issues (how
to make room for more gear, safest way to machine wash our capes,
etc). Anyone got a recommendation for a good multi-tier synth stand?

I've got a few Moogs, a Prophet 5, and some drum machines I want to
put on a stand. I want something that serves the purpose, but doesn't
get in the way (and doesn't require me to get on a step ladder for
solos). I'm leaning towards the A-frame style, assuming you can buy
more rails. Any comments on this style?

it seems that ultimate support has dropped their "a-frame" stands,
at least i can't seem to find them new, and only rarely spotting one
on ebay. i have a 4-tier utimate support a-frame myself, and i put
the crt for my roland s-50 sampler atthe top, and an infrequently
used roland vp-330 up toop next to it. i think i saw another brand
of a-frame recently, but can't recall the details. i find it a fairly
efficient use of space, but i use it for things that i don't really
play via their keyboards, and it's sort of pushed back behind a
couple short 19" racks that sit under the items on the bottom tier.
it's not THE most efficient use of space, but not bad, at least for
my purposes [and i have my simmons kit buried underneath collecting
dust :( ]

it's getting harder to find "high density" keyboard racks.
i see a lot of people utilizing restaurant shelves.
they might be a reasonably priced solution, but i think they are
hard to reconfigure without removing everything and then you need
a lot of space to work with it all after it's broken down.

please let us know how you make out in your situation.
i'm also curious to know what other people here are using.

Thanks for all the replies (some off-list); sounds like lots of folks
are using the A-frame style. Coincedentally, someone was selling the
Mirage three-tier A-frame locally, so I picked it up for cheap this
afternoon.

Stability is the only thing I'm unsure of with this style - has anyone
ever had a synth landslide? I'm giving all the wingnuts good torque
and doing a stress test overnight before loading up the gear.

In case anyone's curious, I'm planning to put a Prophet 5, Minimoog,
Sonic Six, Linndrum, and CR-78 on this thing (with Taurus I pedals below).

Jeff - Funny you mention, my Simmons kit is gathering dust as well. I
hate selling anything, but that's on my 'got to go' list ..

I,m just doing a redesign to remove the old A frames that I had (now sold) as they take up too much area and I was getting a crick in the neck playing the keyboards at the top.
My solution has been to use the sort of shelving / racking used in shop storerooms. Very strong - bolts to the walls. Takes very little floor area.

I had a Jupiter-8 fall off one once (and survive)... V.heavy synth, mind. And no,
I no longer use A-frames. :-)

Re: I've had an Omni 3 tier "a" frame and has regularly held my
P5, EII, 01/W, and Juno 6 and such for over 15 years without a
problem,, look in "Pics" section on this site for illustration. Doug
