verdict?

verdict?

2007-10-02 by jonesalley

I just learned (if playing anything that consists of four chords can be called learning) "Any Way You Want It" by Journey, and was struck by the 'tronnish quality of the string pad being used. Not listed on Andy's site, anybody know what that was? Prophet-5 patch, perhaps?

(Sent yesterday .. for some reason this site defaults to replying to
the individual only)

I would've said Prophet 5 also, but found this on another site:
"In the studio, Rolie tried a mellotron on the number and the
instrument proved defective. Co-producer Geoff Workman managed to
correct the sound somewhat and, once doubled with Rolie's regular
organ, the combination created a unique sound which, coupled with the
stacked background vocals, gave the song a kind of celestial ring."

And it's listed on Planet Mellotron here:

the instrument was probably just neglected.
they really don't like that.

i used to plug a crappy farfisa into an electro-harmonix phaser and
flanger to obtain a "tronnish quality' before i actually owned one.
at the time it was quite 'effective' to my ears. i still have the
crappy farfisa - it has not been plugged in for years, and is probably
quite dead, or at least very ill.

Sir:
Buy new glasses. :-)) It's there, listed under its parent album, 'Departure'.

My mock tron choir was a Juno 60 and a phaser (with the lfo disconnected to give a fixed comb filter). Then I got a real one...

the next step along the way for me [after the farfisa] a was a
roland vp-330 [which i also still own]. the choir sounds satisfied
the need at the time, but the strings never achieved "tron".

what phaser were you using?
i LOVE my mutron phasor II [and would LOVE to own a bi-phase!].
i also have the aforementioned electro-harmonix "small stone"
and a broken mxr phase 90. i will be building a "tau phaser"
sometime in the near future, but it's going to take a while.

it sounds amazing [samples here]:

e-h small stone, then the bigger version (can't remember the strange name, something like 'bad stone'). Then there was the Russin tank like 'small stone' (which was quite big and heavy)
now using a standard Boss phaser for those swooshing moments, great on string section...

I think the Mutron was the best after this Studio phaser that I saw at
Conny's and just a couple of other places. The studio piece is I
think the next Jurgen Haible pcb project. His Tau phaser is an
essential and you have to build it, if you were lucky enough to get
one of the few pcbs offered. I did let you guys know about it.
