Tronspotting

2007-10-02 by MAinPsych@aol.com

Just listened online to Bruce Springsteen's new album, Magic, produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien.  Sounds like there's tron on a number of tracks, i.e., "Devil's Arcade", where there appears to be single line 3-violins doubled with guitar with string pads fading out the phrases.

I guess it was just a matter of time until Bruce Screamsteen defiled one of our sacred Trons on a album.
Despise it too kind of a word for him and his so called music.
I'm awaiting the flak I'm probably in for.
Bring it on!

Gee, Tony, I really like his stuff. I used to know him back in the 70s and have actually been thrilled by his development as an artist. Imagine the opportunity to hear Born to Run and Jungleland on an acoustic guitar with the artist sitting three feet away. And then to hear those tunes fully fleshed out a year and a half later. It was an amazing time. If he used a Tron or Chamberlin... Great.

No Flak from me.

Anyone who hates Springsteen is fine by me.

Not to mention the worst band in the world, U2.

(Now I await the flak)

Steve.

Re: [Mellotronists] Tronspotting

Springsteen has done some decent songs, but most of his work doesn't do
that much for me - and his '80s stuff - let's not go there. U2? Well,
they're no Virgin Prunes, but worst band in the world? Surely that's
reserved for... uhm, ... Molly Hatchet or some such.

Yeah, in spite of sharing a fine first name, I can do
without Springsteen's music. And the '80s?
Musicwise, let's not go there at all ;-)

Not to support either artist, to any degree, but
if Bono and the "Boss" (not the boss of me!) came
a-walkin' into Streetly with all that rock star cash
and ordered a pair of cyclin' 'trons, I'm sure we'd
all be treated to a whole collection of smilin' pics
of Bono, Boss & Bros, arm in arm, happy as clams,
together.
I now put on MY well-worn flak tuxedo and step

We don't have to like the music to do business with an artist.  It's not a personal vendetta, just a matter of taste and the Boss and Bono are short on musical charisma.

Any of you people listen to Fripp and Eno's stuff decades prior to Eno's U2 contribution and Fripp's King Crimson stuff. No pussy footing, amazing stuff to me and still fresh to these ears.
Both notable in my option.
Asante grade to say the least.
Eno's help with U2 is precise and Fripp's King Crimson work was equally good.

Harmless? Andy, you obviously didn't have to listen as they swamped
mid-western American radio in the late '70s with their particular
brand of dumb-fuckery.

In the spirit of fairness however, I will allow that Bon Jovi, as well
as a number of other, as yet to be named candidates, deserve co-equal
status.

Probably because he can't!
He is a singer and not a musician. I forgot he plays piano probably because it's as boring as he is.
Most of the music I listen to is instrumental, and probably 95% British or European.
Tangerine Dream is a fine example.
Freebird must hold some records (no pun) for running too long.
It's like a bad dream that just never stops.
On those rare occasions when I'm not listening to a fav CD and the radio is on Freebird doesn't get past the first few bars before I switch to another station, disgusting crapola I can live well without!

King Crimson made their first album in 1969.

'No Pussyfooting' dates from 1973.

On the subject of Mellotron Abominations, my personal bugbear is that
god-awful 'Changes' by Black Sabbath. Not only does it sound like the
Mellotron was recorded next door, and the lyrics appear to blame
everyone but the singer for his infidelities, but the piano line is so
fucking *rumpty-tumpty* it makes me want to gouge out eyes.

You know what I mean

AH FEEL UNHAPPY (rrrrrrrrrrrrrrumpty-tummmm)

AH FEEL SO SA-AH-AHD (rrrrrrrrrrrrrrumpty-tummmm)

AHV LOST THE BIST FRIND (rrrrrrrrrrrrrrumpty-tummmm)

THAT AHV EVAH HAA-AH-AD (rrrrrrrrrrrrrrumpty-tummmm)

I've never been very clear on what the idea of musical 'validity' means.
Maybe you can explain.

One makes music and people either like it or they do not; that's a
matter of taste and doesn't have any effect on the 'validity' of the
piece. All music is 'valid' in an equal sense, but being an artistic
creation it's open to interpretation, criticism and appreciation.

I cannot stand the majority of the works of Mozart, but I am not about
to say that he is 'not valid'.

OK you're right.
I left out a critical phrase, that being "in my opinion".
After all I am entitled to my opinion and I forgot to "validate" my
statement with that.
And I'm familiar with opinions etc.

I believe I'll have my dinner now.
