Sound Quality Questions

Sound Quality Questions

2007-09-27 by thinkingalouduk

Hi All

A couple of questions came to me recently, and being a Virtual Mellotronists (I know,
lowest of the low) I don't have any practical knowledge, so maybe someone can help.

1) I'm guessing that when new tape sets are made these days, they're produced from a
digital recording of the original tape masters, rather than an analog-analog copy. If so,
does this have any discernible effect if, say, you were to run them at half-speed, or do a
Pinderesque "The Voyage" pitch bend? (Running my samples at half speed, or indeed
pitch-bending them to any degree produces an audible digital artifact, which just doesn't
sound "right". And pitch-bending at half-speed, well... ;) )

2) To what degree does the Mellotron itself colour the sound coming from the tapes? In
other words, if you were to put, say, Chamberlin 3 Violins and Cello voices onto Mellotron
tapes, and play it back, would it sound like a Chamberlin, or would it be coloured by the
Tron itself? (I'm aware that the Tron 3 Violins was copied from the Chamberlin 3 Violins,
but apparently not very well, hence the characteristic Tron sound for that voice.)

Forgive my ignorance - I'm saving pennies for the real thing...

Thanks in advance,

Owen

There are various opinions. In my experience, there are NO negative
effects. The people making the new tape sets take great care to
preserve and improve the quality of the sounds.

The replay mechanism effects the sound significantly:

Analog replay:
The sound quality of a tape replay keyboard is a bit different every
time with every note. (That's a good thing)

There is something* special about the sound quality of multiple notes
replayed simultaneously by tapes and tape heads. Why? I don't know.
(Norm knows. Tell us Norm.)

Digital replay:
The sound quality of a digital sample replay keyboard is exactly the
same every time with every note. (Yes, even with digital samples of
Mellotron sounds!)

The sound quality of multiple notes replayed simultaneously by a
digital sample replay keyboard lacks that special something*.

We could go on and on all day on this topic. (better this than that
other topic tho :-) )

Jump in anytime Martin, Norm

Hello y'all,
There is a snobbery that exists regards generating tapes from tape copy masters over generating tapes from digital files. The bandwidth in the mellotron and the bandwidth of the recordings means that a 32 bit sample rate would easily reproduce everything in the catalogue with no detriment. We use 44.1 at 24 bit depth. The idea of having copy masters to make tapes from is unrealistic in the modern world. If you work out the variations you'd need based on the sounds available in our library, it would be ridiculous. In addition, we have original sets made by Les that we refer to, making sure there is no drift in sonic accuracy and there isn't. Having said that, there were glaring differences between Les's copy masters. We try to reference the recordings that seem the most consistent. We have also used the ears of well seasoned mellotronists and they have all been happy with tapes recorded from a digital source.
I know little of Protools but I know it would not be detrimental either. Why argue against this and then perform with an M400 hopelessly out of kilter? It's a complete nonsense Mr Gallo!

Hi Owen / All:
My experience is that the Mellotron does add it's own colour to the sound. I would say that's the main appeal (or drawback depending on your point of view). Chamberlin sounds in a Mellotron don't sound like a Chamberlin to me at all. It still sounds just like a Mellotron. There's a bandwidth difference between Mellotron and Chamberlin heads (the M1's anyway) and the differing distances between pressure pads, pinch rollers, and capstan probably factor into that as well.
Hope this helps.

I find myself curious about the "bandwidth difference between Mellotron and Chamberlin heads (the M1's anyway)." Which has the "higher" specs?
Speaking of "higher specs" I'm glad the conversation has lifted again from the past couple of days' rhetoric. I've actually been very amused at it all - you guys make some awesome cracks at each other, but always with a great show of mutual friendship obviously shining through. Brothers who just have to tease each other with great respect underlying it all. When that disappeared, with one participant apparently not "getting the joke" or the friendly atmoshere the humor usually has, somehow it just went ONLY nasty instead. (Has he retracted with more than just the little "chirp" of an out-of-adjustment tape return??) Thanks for returning to the higher ground.
Thanks again, too, to those who delved into the MySpace copyright/rights question inadvertently brought up by my note a few days ago. (And of course, the attendent jokes as well, Frank and Mike! Hilarious!) Mike, Frank, Owen and others... excellent info. Thanks very much. That is what this site IS about, eh?
Cheers, and happy weekend!
Berington

Thanks for all the responses re sound quality. Very helpful all round! One of these days I'll
maybe get some hands-on experience...

Cheers

Dear All,
As far as I can see recording from digital masters is the only sensible way forward for consistent tapes.
We tried making a digital M400 but rejected it on the grounds that it sounded wrong when playing multiple notes. We also found that reproduction of Fairlight sounds were better than from a digital sampler (which is ironic).
Other reasons such as the unique way that even the same note will be slightly different on each playing have been pointed out in previous posts.

It's a reasonable question... I don't make 'tron tapes so I can't
supply an actual answer, but I will point out when you make Mellotron
tapes there are a number of subtle issues: getting the best source
material, getting the EQ and levels correct, compensating for tuning
on the individual notes, getting the note start times correct, getting
the three sounds together to record the three tracks, making sure they
all time align correctly, etc. There's a lot to it, and it requires a
lot of care, and digital audio can certainly help there. Editing
sound chunks is something digital audio does really well.

Of course, if it's a crappy digital audio system, it's gonna sound
like crap.

Digital audio processing can do pitch shifting, but not nearly as
cleanly as playing an analog tape at a different speed. As you
noticed in your sampler.

I'll claim that, in terms of musical impact, the Mellotron colors the
sound alot. So much so that the fact that it's a Mellotron is more
significant than what the original source instrument was.

Digital samplers can do clean pitch sweeps and shifts. Owen's
"digital artifacts" are likely caused by a midi control problem or a
poor controller pitch wheel.

One of the shitty digital editor pitch change methods involves
changing the pitch while keeping the duration unchanged. (Or changing
the duration while keeping the pitch unchanged). I've never had good
results with these. If a recording needs that type of fixing, it is
best to just record it again!
