Chamberlin 300

Chamberlin 300

2007-09-25 by vincentgallo66

I owned the Chamberlin 300 that is up on eBay. For the record dating
back to 1977, I have owned 12 different Mellotrons, including two
MKII's, one of which I sold to John Frusciante and a mint M-4 that I
gave to Sean Lennon. I still own and use a Chaberlin M-1 remote and
have working two very clean 100% original Trons. My good friend Woody
and I did most of the work to restore the badly neglected 300. Rob
Harvey an LA tech did the amplifier stage restoration. I purchased the
300 off eBay from a local LA session guy who had not at all properly
cared for it. Once it was fully operating the 300 played and sounded
as good as any other Tron or Chamberlin I have owned and better than
most. The Bobby Darin provenance came from the mouth of Richard
Chamberlin and I am not sure when or on what Bobby Darin played it but
I do know he played and owned this Chamberlin. Still, the value of a
working Chamberlin 300 goes far past who owned or played it. That
300's value is far more than any Mellotron out there. Regarding
repair and parts, several 600's were made and several 300 remotes so
parts are around. Reliability wise, the 300 was the easiest to restore
and get working perfect and had never given me a problem once finished
being serviced. Originality means a lot to me especially with the
tapes. Folks repaint and restore their Trons thinking what a great
thing they have done. I feel a 100% original machine up the original
working spec is best. I sold/traded the 300 to both to get something
else I needed and because I want to travel with the M-1 remote which I
could not do with the 300. I loved it while it was mine and whoever
wins it will love the shit out of it.

Good question. I am not sure what I said but the mood was friendly and
funny during our trade deal. I make a good living so when I sell or
trade something it has nothing to do with money. There are no bad
feelings from me to the person getting whatever it is as I want to let
it go. The current 300 owner Chris is a really smart tuff business man
(kid as he is 23); I enjoy trading with him and like to tease him. His
snide comment may have been a teasing joke back to me

I can also vouch for Woody's work. I've had several conversations / done business with him and feel that anyone who buys it would have very supportive resources between him, Richard and a few others. There is no need for worry with this one.

Reply from Vincent Gallo: Actually Mr. Dicks son , I figure I will
stick with my career as a movie star for now but thanks for note.
What's your exciting career these days ?

Actually Vincent, despite his rather abrupt wit, Mike may be one of the finest Mellotron players in the world. He has been in a band called Systems Theory. They released a CD called, "Soundtracks for Imaginary Movies." This CD, released in 2004 was considered ground breaking. Rest assured, and with all due respect, as a musician, he kicks your ass. As an actor, he has yet to prove himself. As a human being... we think he does pretty darn well. He also makes a living doing other stuff as well.
You are an actor that plays music. He is a musician that excels at it. If I was to compare your musicianship to his, I could not. His talent far exceeds yours.

Don't forget his world-class ability to clear a bar with one fart.

Shit. I guess asking Vince for a plug for Systems Theory and his good
buddy Mike just went up in flames! $20 rescinded! :-)

So, I hope I don't start anything with this question, but I'm wondering
if, with all the talk in the auction description of restoration, the
photos were taken before or after said restoration. I hope it's before,
because the poor thing looks like it's about to fall apart.
The photos are fascinating though. They really emphasize the "home
made" aspect of the machine - the wiring around the cycling (?) motor
(is that pitch control circuitry?) frightens me.

I agree John, I think the pictures have been the best
thing about this topic, I see the bidding is up to
$3327.78, a very precise bid!

I didn't.
A friend and I were going to go after it up to 5K but came to our senses at 3600 or so. We already have a 4 Track. If I had it I would have completely repaired the cabinet and replaced the grill cloths with original material. I would have also cleaned up the inside. It would have looked a lot better.
I'm sure some folks would disagree with that approach.
I guess It would be like buying the General Lee and repainting it. If it's my car I can do what I want.
