pete townshend on the mellotron.

pete townshend on the mellotron.

2007-09-19 by jeffc@netaxs.com

i finally got around to reading the REALLY long interview with
mr townshend from the august 2007 issue of "eq" magazine. on
page 45 of the issue, he is asked by the interviewer:

EQ: How come you never got into using the Mellotron?
Or did you try it and decide it was something you didn't like?

PT: They had one at IBC as soon as they came out in 1967 - the
Bee Gees had asked for it. I thought it was horrible.

[he then goes on to talk about a Lowry organ he liked and how
much he digs Ableton Live software...]

in his defense [like he needs me to defend him...] he actually
is VERY technically adept and savvy.

so will his endorsement be part of the new marketing campaign?
would make a lovely tee shirt.

THE MELLOTRON
IT WAS HORRIBLE

Thank God he never liked them. Can you imagine him smashing one up at the end of his shows?

well, on the other hand, it might have upped production to unheard
of levels, though i can't imagine putting lot of pride into building
something that you KNEW was going to be destroyed [though a chef can
do this every night many times, knowing where a meal will end up...]

it would have possibly created a HUGE market in spare parts, some of
which we could probably use these days...

but yeah - that would have been truly painful to watch...

Out of curiousity, what does he say about the Lowrey organ?

It's interesting that on the "Classic Albums" DVD for "Who's Next",
they never reveal that it was the Lowrey doing that wild faux-synth
part in "Baba O'Riley" (even though later in the DVD he sits down at
the Lowrey to demonstrate "Won't Get Fooled Again").

You can pick up the same model for peanuts on eBay/craigslist (I got
mine in perfect shape for $75).

Hi Frank.
He'd have to have taken his place in the que behind Rick Wakeman! With Tony Banks not far behind...

So he smashes up the Mellotron and throws it into the audience. Then he angrily storms off stage. I would have had heart failure.

I think you are being very unfair with Pete. He is a great guitarist,
and a outstanding composer, and has composed some of the greatest works
of art of the 60's and 70's. The fact he doesn't like mellotrons doesn't
change that...

Regarding to his look... yeah... I guess the people loving mellotron
where luckier with that... what about Tony Banks of genesis, and MR
Wakeman... at least Pete didn't pretend he was gandalf when on stage...

Best.

Personally, I have always liked the Who. I think Townsend is brilliant. However... no one in my universe is beyond being goofed on, including me.

Besides, everyone knows Gandalf was a pain in the ass and a user. I don't recall Rick wearing a pointy hat on stage.

He didn't have to (naturally pointy head).

Rick (no, not that one -- although I did wear a cape for a couple of gigs once...)

(But it was a very tasteful cape, more Phantom of the Opera)

Everything I read is spot on true.

One thing though:

The boy used that Lowrey home organ in a really original and rare way
on that song I confuse with the other one.

His use of the EMS Synthi / vcs3 is impressive to many of us synthi wonks.

His Arp work emulating orchesteral beds (not the leads and ordinary
stuff) is again impressive.

I don't know if it was Townsend or company help or Glyn, who will try
anything his non tron contributions are far above average. Some ems
and arp types say brillliant.

Keeping in mind everybody gad one hit song in their minds and every
idiot has at least one profound thing to say (or offer).

The Bee Gees (Robert Stigwood Band) Mellotron work was not real
impressive to me I'd say being eclipsed by Beggars Opera of a factor
of 1000%

No apology to me necessary, I just long ago realized that we humans all have
our own demons to fight in life and that I'm not fit to sit in judgment of
anybody else. I hope that ultimately Pete will be remembered positively for
the music that he created and that he succeeds in fighting his own demons.

By the way, I was the one that asked the questions for the hundredth time so
it's my fault that they get cranky anyway.
