*That* Sound

*That* Sound

2002-08-05 by kenmerb@aol.com

Yeah, guys like me and KL slap a PC in the corner of a bedroom, hook it up to
our gear and call it a "studio". Well, it's not a studio, there are some
things you just can't do in this environment. No isolation rooms, no natural
acoustics, no expensive gear such as plate reverbs or high end mixing boards,
no way to record through a mic'd Marshall stack. And a real MKII. Arrrgggh!

an emt plate on it's side with a mattress thrown on it works
very well as a bed, thank you very much! ;O)
don't even try to tell me i'm the only one who has done this!
(just make sure it's NOT in use when trying to sleep...)

I think you can get very close to "that" sound without a Marshall
stack in a professional studio. I send tron output through two
Yorkville AM 100 Acoustic Guitar Amps. (amp volumes at 11 and a touch
of reverb). Record with a SM57 mic, 7 feet back in a 12 X
14 room (nothing special).
I can't get quite the same results with direct recording.
Something about the high DB volume in the room gives the recording a
sharp edge. I tried lower volume on the amps, but the recording lost
the edge.

Hey, is there an echo in here? OK Fritz, I get the picture, but I'm not
trying to make excuses, just looking for a way to get better recordings out
of my Tron. Believe me, I'm very happy with what I have, just wish there was
a way to crank up the volume in my *studio*.

Actually, there have been quite a few good tips since starting this
discussion, but most of them I can't use in my current environment. I had no
idea that so many people were miking up their Trons. I'll have to try that
one of these days when my neighbors are on vacation.
