Rush

2007-07-02 by Jim Anderson

I just picked up the new Rush album "Snakes and Arrows". Having been
a listener of theirs since way back (even if they are Canadian! ;)
I'd been disappointed in the last few albums but the new one is
surprisingly better. Also surprising is their use of a mellotron one
of the tracks. On the Special Edition that I picked up there is a
video where Geddy Lee says it's probably the first time they used one
since a song called "Tears" from 2112. The video shows Geddy
recording the tron strings on and talking about it's qualities
(unfortunately it's mixed way down on the final product...).

Good to hear about this. Vapor Trails (2001?) was good as well -- a stripped-down sound, whihc is something they are NOT known for. I agree with you regarding the last few albums. There's a stretch from the mid-80's on where they kinda lost it, IMHO. Vapor Trails and the recent live releases made up for it, though.
And speaking of Floyd, am I correct in my thinking that the only 'tron they used was on "Syssyphus" (sic) from Ummagumma?

I'm also a long time fan/listener too and see them live for the full effect of "Snakes and Arrows'.
Brilliant work from a band that never ceases to entertain me!
Geddy Lee had a Korg X7 with a Moog Phatty on top, so who knows what the X7 was controlling.
His bass work was more predominant than ever, if you can imagine that!
I admit to being highly biased, but they blew me away in every respect.

OK my mistake it was a ROLAND X7!
The rest is accurate.
Great light show too as usual.

"Korg X7?" No such critter in the Korg lineup, perhaps a Fantom X7 by Roland?
