almost new tapeset

almost new tapeset

2002-01-18 by Terry Conheady

Hi folks, About three months ago Mike Dickenson asked
about how I liked the new tape set I purchased in
Toronto this September. Well it's taken me this long
to really use it in the context of a band. First, when
I loaded them into #1300 they slipped and warbled like
a pack of weasels. I didn't want to tighten down the
rollers as I use it for my main tron with the cello/3
violins/flute, used in just about every tune. So I
loaded them into old #413. They worked well
immediately, without a tweak.
After a long break, the band played together this past
weekend and I incorporated the new sounds into our
songset.
The Dickstrings worked great, especially with the 3
violins playing melody on top. It was rich and full
and now replaces the prophet strings I used to use.
The viola mixed in really held down the low end
nicely. The real surprise was the 300b string (solo
violin). It has a "gypsy" quality that works extremely
well with our more acoustic numbers. I found myself
exchanging leads with the guitar player's E-bow to
great effect. The R.B. french horn is another winner,
mellow and very orchestral. I used it in combination
with sustained flutes on the 1300 to achieve a
beautiful blend. I formally used a tron trumpet for
this part, but often found it rather "squawky" (like
stepping on a goose).
In all, I'm very happy with the sounds chosen. I find
myself composing new material just so I can use them
even more often. It's pretty exciting to install a
tape rack with new, usable sounds. It's like getting a
whole new tron.

( in regard to the discussions taking place now on
this list, I've gotten great service from both
Streetly Electronics, John & Martin, and from
Mellotron Archives, Dave and Marcus. I feel lucky to
have such fine choices.)

I'm really glad to hear this. The Dickstrings combination was found
totally by accident when playing about with a Streetly hire machine at
Mellotron World Headquarters in Blithbury.

Hi folks,
I too have been impressed with the dickstrings combination that Mike Dickerson stumbled upon. It was a real pleasure to speak with Matt at the last symposium in Toronto. Mr. Dickerenson was very candid about the serendipitous events that led to the discovery of the dickstring proprietary sound algorithm. A brainstorming session in sound capturing, also known as soundstorming, led Mr. Dicklington to the virtual sonisphere epicenter in Blithbury.
Little did Mark know that he would make the whole Duckerton family proud of his accomplishment. His cousin, little Sophie Dicklingberg of Bratwurst, Pennsylvania has a picture of her famous cousin Mickey Duckensonsington hanging in her room. "I want to be just like Mills when I grow up" she's proud to say.
Yes, life hasn't always been a bowl of curried shrimp for Mart Drecklingblatt, but with the air of success surrounding all that he touches, life is begining to smell mighty fine right about now .

Hi All:

RE: Dickstrings...and

'Life is beginning to smell mighty fine right about
now'

Does this mean I have to activate my custom tron 'air
raid siren' again??

I too, am a proud owner of the award winning
'Dickstrings' and am quite fond of creating all time
great funeral dirge arrangements with them! However my
young children do tend to get frightened. A fine job
indeed Mr.Dirkinfeld! I have to tell them bed-time
stories of 'Lord of the Rings' Balrogs to calm them
down...

Speaking of the LOTR movie wouldn't it have been nice
if a bit of tron made its' way onto the soundtrack
here and there?? It would be dreamy indeed!

Terry's 'weasel' comment rang true to me also and I
keep EMI tron for original tapes and 1167 for cranking
down on the new stuff. I still await new rollers.

With respect to the 'tron wars' brewing on these
pages; I for one am glad that I have a choice and I
can say that I got good value for my poor CANBUCKS
with Streetly and have 3 racks of tapes, a set of
tapes, an SMS2 and a nicely cared for EMI tron as well
as 1167. The EMI is humming along quite nicely! It was
great to get such fabulous personal service from the
lads at Tron-to MKII!! Other-wise it would still be a
pipe dream for me...USD prices are a killer!

If you festoon your Mellotron with party streamers, wear jokey clothes,
put on a red nose and play 'Happy Days Are Here Again' on Dickstrings
then it will still sound like a funeral. And you were to play it at a
funeral then it would become something so utterly miserable that...well,
let's just say this is the reason why Blechta looks the way he does.

A new Systems Theory track is coming out soon. Dance beats in 4/4. Major
chords. Upbeat. Humorous musical quotations. Still sounds like a fucking
lament for the dead.

minor'.
