Well I just read the MK VI review of #029. Not bad. Though I was sure
that the Azimuth issue would come up yet again. But as the reviewer pointed
out this is really only an issue when using tapes from streetly... Markus
has informed me that once the Azimuth is adjusted it doesnt really need
to be "messed" with.. I found it strange that they mentioned the issue
with the tape frames not fitting properly into an original 400 since
they were basically designed for use in the 400s'. Or am I wrong in this?
All in all the article maid me even more impatient to recieve my new
MK VI #027, (actually Markus offered #029 but I chose #027 cause its
a smaller number and because it happens to be my age.. ),.. The white
cabinet looks amazing!! I am getting a black cabinet though I have heard
that no matter what color you buy a MK VI in , you always end up lusting
after the other. Is'nt that just the way it goes? Keyboard magazine is
scheduled to run their MK VI review in the September issue I believe,
using my Mellotron as the example.. Since I lived so close to Keyboard's
offices in San Francisco,Markus thought what a great way to kill two
birds with one stone and also offer me a great discount on the shipping!
I look forward to the article with some nervous anticipation.. Now matter
what I must say once again that Markus is a TRUE Mellotron enthusiast.
And talk about the care and support! When I asked him what would happen
if the keyboard guys broke something or if any damage occoured in shipping,
his reply was, "If there is something wrong with your machine when you
get it, I will fly out there to fix it myself." This is not an uncommon
reaction as Markus told me of a recent trip to California to tweak trons
including a machine owned by Eddie Van Halen! (hey i'm a guitar player
too!),.. I have nothing but confidence that the new MK VI will do everything
I am expecting it to do and more. When the MK VI arrives in few weeks,
I will let everyone on this list know how it all turns out. Until then..
Oh by the way the Magnolia soundtrack is great!! John Brion is my new
hero!! Also Has anyone heard Sparklehorse? The Album Its a Wonderful
Life has great use of Chamberlin Flute, Cello, Mellotron, Optigan,Orchestron,
wire recorder, Tom waits!! great lo-fi indie-pop..

I bought my Mellotron in 1975 and the 1st thing I did was tear it down and paint it black, with no regrets. So personally I've never lusted for a white one. Just received my SMS2 board yesterday (thanks lads!) and the tape frames should be loaded up with fresh sounds soon.

Streetly can make minor adjustments during the tape production
process to suit the MK VI azimuth. New Streetly tapes / frames work
very well in a MK VI! At TrontoII we tried a standard Streetly M400
frame in a MK VI. On one of the tracks (Fairlight voice, with lots
of high frequency content), we noticed that a few notes were not
quite as crisp as the others. NOT a big issue to my tin ears!

I haven't heard of any problems using MK VI tapes / frames in M400's.
It seems to me that Mellotron Archives supply these to M400 owners
regularly.

PS: Derrick:
re: The LUST thing and your new 'tron.... Not recommended. It could
void the warranty.

Markus, correct me if I am wrong but would this be the same #027 MK
VI that I and my wife test drove 3 years ago about this time under
the watchful eye of DK at the "assembly plant" in North Hollywood? If
so, Derrick, you are very, very, very fortunate and I am very, very,
very envious!! =)
