Strategies for 'tron hunting

Strategies for 'tron hunting

2007-04-27 by guybrush03

Since 'trons seem to be a beast to track down (atleast using the
obvious avenues), how are people typically finding them nowadays? Not
sure if anyone keeps stats on this kind of thing, but seems like ebay
results are infrequent and bidding wars. Seems there could be some
other way than watching ebay for the next ten years (or shelling out
for a MkVI).

Anyone had luck finding a 'tron using other methods? Is there some
underground mellotron trading ring??

Side question - Is it a life-long depression to own an M400 when you
really want a MkII? Since the latter seems utterly unattainable, I've
always wondered if it's a drag to "settle" for the (relatively
limited) M400. How do you get your foxtrot fix?

"Watcher of the Skies" sounds great on one M400 using cello/3violins
(through the alkaloid haze of those days I seem to recall it being played
that way on the "Selling England" tour at the Montreal Forum) and some
careful chord voicing. And it looks like there are at least four or five
M400 models every year on eBay, with the mellotron.com Mark VII capable of
giving you your two-manual fix until the Streetly gents are ready to amaze
us.

It sounds okay played on Mk II brass/String section for a bit of bottom
end 'oomph' as well.

Unless you were in the habit of drinking plant-produced amines like
ephedrine I suspect you mean 'alcoholic'. :-)

Sorry to beak this to you, guybrush, but there is a secret club. Many of us are members, and we know where there is a barn full of Mark IIs and M-300s as well as a huge stash of M-400s. We leak them out on ebay every once in a while.
Until you get offered membership, I guess you're going to have to hunt for them the way I used to... with a bow and arrow. Bow hunting is pretty easy, but you have to have good aim because once spotted, Mellotrons of any model move very quickly.
So what is a "guybrush?" I hesitate to think.

How on earth can you be depressed if you own an M400? I'd like an M300 but I'm stuck with M-tron samples, I think I would die happy if I owned an M400!

Bow and arrow Mellotron hunting? Works best when the
'trons are in rut. Best lure is a mixture of
isopropyl alcohol, rubber rejuvinator, and cash.
Standby with patience and a pint of stout, and you
will bag one. Lugging it back home can be the hard
part.

What's the turn-around time for ordering a MkVI?

And do MkII's ever show up on ebay? What are the chances of your
average schmuck ever tracking one down in his lifetime?

The MkVII doesn't do a whole lot for me. Even if playing Dixieland
gets old after awhile (*gasp*), it would be nice to have dozens of
sounds available (instead of 3 or 6).

A very pristine Mark II was posted on ebay couple of months back. It was connected to an estate auction in England I believe. As I recall, the winning bidder, after all fees and commissions would have had about $12,000.00 in it. Then there would be the cost of crating it and shipping it to the US or wherever.
Pretty rare.
If you want a Mellotron with lots of sounds, I think you should contact Streetly about a brand spanking new M-4000. 24 resident sounds and it won't give you a hernia trying to transport it if you want to drag it from place to place. I think you can call them at:
1-800-MLO-Tron*
or
Go to Mellotronics.com
Frank
*(just kidding).

That's interesting about the M4000. Hadn't heard any specs yet, so
was waiting for the aforementioned two-weeks to expire for details.
Most importantly, does it have lots of grill cloth, push-buttons, and
big dials? *g*

BTW - Is there a sample set anywhere that has all of the MkII sounds
(rhythms/fills/leads)? From what I recall, there are typically some
or most, but not all. I wouldn't really want to go the sample route
with only a portion of the sounds.

(rhythms/fills/ leads)? From what I recall, there are typically some
or most, but not all. I wouldn't really want to go the sample route
with only a portion of the sounds.

You know, I'm beginning to think you are the only guy on the list who knows nothing about the M-4000. And you seem a little bitter. I know what it looks like. So, I'm sure, do the rest of the select few who were in early. The good news is, you're going to get to see it very soon.
In the meantime, maybe you can put something new and original on your web site to tide us all over.
Perhaps a video of Mellotron "cows farting" or something else new and undiscovered.

I'm sure they'd build you one with a couple of integral Wharfedales and
a bit of Tweed on the front if you ask nicely.

Mattias probably doesn't really have his head up his anus. I think
it's more likely that a big BUG has crawled in there.

Whenever I get a bug up my ass, two pints of Guinness with four
pickled eggs does the trick.

Wow. How much lubrication does it take to get all that stuff in there?

Clay,
So then what? You have a well fed , drunk, bug up your ass, right? Do you put the bottles of Guinness in there with the eggs, or do you just open them up first, screw in the necks, lay back and pour?

That's kinda what I was asking. Maybe after you pour the Guinness in, the eggs just pop on in nice and easy. I don't suspect the bug cares either way.
