Number 1407 Has Passed from My Hands to a Better Place

Number 1407 Has Passed from My Hands to a Better Place

2007-04-15 by The Franz Family

I rejoined the list to get reconnected with the Mellotron crowd. I hadn't really paid it much attention the last few years or so. As we all know these things crave attention. So, I rejoined the list hoping to recapture "the feeling" or have an amicable separation. Well, there was a post that someone REALLY wanted a Mellotron and he seemed to know more about the maintenance and upkeep of them than me. After a few exchanges of emails and a phone call, two things became apparent. 1) He knew WAY more than me about the Mellotron. 2) He would actually play it more than five times per year. He now has 1407 and the 'Tron world will be better for it!

PS, If I ever win a big Powerball Lottery (over $100 Million), I'm going to buy a Mk II for the church and try to hire Mike Pinder to teach the Church organists! Is that a "pipe" dream or what?

Jeff's being way too kind, but yesterday I made the 700 mile round trip
to bring 1407 back to my house. This is the beginning of a dream come
true. Without the members of this list, I literally would not have 1407
right now, so thanks to you all.

Now you'd best get ready for some really stupid questions from me - like
can I used denatured alcohol to clean the playback heads or does it have
to be isoproply?

PS Jeff, if I win the powerball lottery, I'll buy a MK II for your
church...

I've always found #600 grit wet/dry to be the best way to go. KIDDING!
First try using a little auto polish (not wax!!!). This will bring the heads back to looking like chrome. Also get some "Precision Electronics Cleaner" from Radio Shack. This stuff is great for cleaning all of the accumulated crap off of the headblock. Once done, a good commercial tape head cleaner should be used to get all of the residue off. Then... demagnetize.
Best of luck
