The day I played with Genesis

The day I played with Genesis

2007-04-08 by kinchmusic@aol.com

In 1979 Genesis recorded the album Duke with little or no Mellotron.... Damn their eyes!
I've always thought that Heathaze was the poorer for this stripped down approach to the production.
Well, after thinking about it for some time, I've finally got around to doing something about rectifying this grave injustice.
Guys, please have a listen to how I think the track would have sounded, had it appeared on, say A trick of the tail.
For anyone unfamiliar with the original track, I have added Mellotron and bass pedals.
Might have overdone it in places, but, hey, and old guy is allowed the occasional self-indulgence isn't he? I know Genesis purists will hate anyone tampering with perfection...but, watch my face...Does it say Bovvered? .....Am I bovvered?...No! (Apologies to our American cousins, for whom the last bit will mean nothing al all)

Unless I miss my guess, Andy, it means you're not bovverd at all.

I don't think it's overdone. Good mix. Nicely done. Fuck the purists!

Can you remove the PC vocal and get PG to sing it?

Well, it is, but it requires money changing hands for the hit, and in
the end is just messy...

i like this quite a lot. well done!!!! i wish i could have a full
fidelity copy. you should upload it on the YouSendIt website in audio
format (or some lossless format...NOT mp3).

i disagree regarding someone's comment about replacing Phil's vocal
with Peter, though. Phil has a prettier voice which, i feel, better
suits the song. but then, i prefer Phil's vocals (circa 1976/77...
before he got too confident and oversang it) on The Carpet Crawl.

1978 was the start of the GENESNOOZE era. (AKA the Gene-shits era)

Now there's a song that will give you goose-bumps, followed by a

Oh, come on, Clay. Tell us what you really think! You're so shy.

My feeling is that Genesis lost their "edge" when Gabriel left. Their solution was...add more lights! Yes! That's it! Lights will so much more to our show than ever could.

I'll never forget the let down seeing the band on "Trick of the Tail" tour stop in Toronto. Phil sang "Supper's Ready" while wearing a Maple Leafs jersey and had his hands in his pockets most of the time. So inspiring...

Dear All,
Still remember the first tour with vari-lights at the NEC. First half hour vari-lights only moved when off so just looks like a normal capable rig. Get to "mama" and every light swivels to toast Phil who is standing on the appointed spot. Members of the audience look at each other for re-assurance that they did just see every light in the rig move!
However still thought the Lamb tour with PG was better and there was an M400 as well...
PG does a pretty good show nowadays
