Sorry no - this was the Orchestron if you're referring the mid 70's period.
--the isley brothers - yes on Don't Say Goodnight 1980.The mellotron probably belonged to the studio.
It makes a difference. If you own a mellotron, you have more time to come up with some innovative playing techniques than if you spend just a few rushed minutes with it in a studio setting.

At times, it's not what you say, but how you say it...
I'm not huge fan of the Moodies, but I do recognize their contribution to the progress of the instrument...
And from a previous topic, I always thought Uncle Floyd was the 5th Beatle...

agreed. appreciation of different types of music, like so many
things, is a matter of individual taste. i had friends who loved 70's
era King Crimson AND The Grateful Dead. i could never figure that
out. opposite ends of the spectrum if you ask me. i never could and
still don't appreciate The Dead. but that doesn't mean they SUCK. i
just don't personally like them...the music bores me to death.
but...to each their own. i begrudge no-one their artistic expression.
if i don't care for the music i just won't buy or listen to it. i see
no need to bash the band or the people who DO like them.
one of the problems with society today (and this is MY opinion,
that's all) is that some people aren't willing to agree to disagree.
with music, that's almost essential. not everyone is going to like
the same things. and some people will like the same band but for
totally different reasons. it makes for some tension but, the world
would be a pretty boring place if everyone liked and disliked the
same things.
anyway, just some food for thought. bon appetit!!

Hi G B and all, Will temporarily de-lurk to add my two bits' worth.
Our list is not censored. I've seen helluva lots of postings over the
last 9+ years. Most about Trons, music, tech stuff, etc. And quite a bit
unrelated.

that's not really relevant. Point is, some of us "seasoned" members

Some waited 30 years to own one , some had them 30 years.
It's not what you wrote about the MB which ruffled feathers, GB.
It's the WAY you presented your opinions. For example, If I enter
a chat-room of classic Corvette owners/club, and say the slightest
unexpected thing about fiberglass bodies and such, I'd better wear
a flak jacket or run like hell.
Dunno who said the phrase "One person's trash is another's treasure."

ok. put it like this... put a mellotron in front of me and put one in front of you and lets see which one of us performs magic. your understanding of this instrument is all science (i assume thats why youre here) and no soul. the science is the means and NOT the end. if you actually do apply yourself artistically on the mellotron and happen to be good, then i would love for you to share your music with me and prove me wrong. i am not looking to impose my view, i am looking to get you people thinking about the not-so-obvious possibilities of the mellotron too, not just the watered down pop aspect(thanks for bringing up that coke commercial, btw). its only an opinion people, RELAX! nothing personal, nothing that any of you should have taken offense to, just a simple expression of my opinion, which is that the moody blues are overrated and there are many more recordings done with a tron that surpass anything they touched. thats ok! im sure they did some things better outside of music than the guys with genuine talent and artistic insight. and if you disagree, just explain why you disagree and let that be that. dont be so emotional. at ease soldiers! bazz --- In Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com, "jonesalley" <jonesalley@...> wrote: > > Mellotroll, go back to the MySpace forums where you belong. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: G B > To: LSF5275@... > Cc: Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2007 5:22 PM > Subject: Re: [Mellotronists] mellotron users who CLOWNED moody blues > > > lol ooh ok, so this place is censored. you would think that this of all places would be the place to freely discuss GOOD music that uses the mellotron. guess not. you guys win, the moody blues are awesome DUDE > > > > On 3/14/07, LSF5275@... <LSF5275@...> wrote: > In a message dated 3/14/2007 1:28:32 P.M. First off out of respect, think about the people in this forum. To us, Mr. Pinder and the Moody Blues are an important part of the Mellotron heritage and like them or not, these discussions will go on whether it be babble, puns or fact...nature of the beast. So let cool heads prevail here. Second, thanks for the list, now I don't feel so out of place. You see my record collection is extensive and also diverse. I knew from the release of TEE that Kraftwerk used a Tron. You see I didn't spend the 70's folowing the Moodies, in fact I was a dj on a Cleveland disco station and worked many years doing the local clubs before the mainstream knew what Disco was. I happen to like disco and r&b so remember that when you're listening to Skin Tight or Peanut Butter. For the record I probably remember more music and groups than you forgot. Everyone has different tastes, you see purple, someone else sees violet. Learn to diversify and widen your scope and be a little more humble. And no Joy Division was no surprise, it was a good impression. Respectfully Doug

I guess we once again fail to communicate. I tried to explain it to you off list but that didn't seem to work. You don't know me and you obviously don't know much about Mellotrons. You may have demonstrated that you have the ability to listen to music and perhaps identify a song in which one is played, but that's about it. Your opinion carries no weight with me at all. I don't need to put a Mellotron in front of you. The only time that will ever happen is if you are fortunate enough to be in the audience when one is being played by me or someone else (other than you.) I have no reason to accept any challenge from someone who runs their mouth with nothing to back it up. Why don't you describe to us all here what your credentials are? The community of Mellotronists is a small and devoted one. You may be on this list... but like the old saying goes, "You can't be a biker if you don't own a bike." And you can't be a Mellotronist if you don't have a Mellotron. All you can do is wish. There are many members of this list who contribute positively yet haven't yet realized their goal of owning a Mellotron. Try being like them. Why don't you go listen to whatever band you like. If there is something interesting you might like to share with the rest of us, or a question you want to ask, please do. If you would like to start a positive discussion about a subject interesting to you, please do. If all you want to do is spew vitriol and empty challenges, please find someplace else to do so. Maybe you should reexamine your original posts and try starting over. If nothing else you should be congratulated on starting a swarm of posts tonite. Think of it this way, did your parents come down on you when you were young and listening to that heathen laden rock and roll as many of our time did? Well now we are the "parents" and some of us tend to resent change, its the ones who grow with it that fare better. Judging by your list you have diverse tastes, good, grow with that. It is the differences in this group that make the sum greater, and we are all "mother hens" to our Trons, so like D Train,,Keep On!!!!!Doug

doesnt seem to be a question of youth now, does it doug? but you probably dont remember half of those records. too bad your youth was wasted on moody blues.
So do you own a Mellotron? Or are you just being an antagonistic a-hole with a chip on his shoulder about the Moody Blues? I've seen many of the bands on your list, live. I can't think of one of them that put on a better show. Different, perhaps, but not better. So you like Mellotrons. We al do. That's why we're here.

Vance, I missed the part about you having a Chamberlin. My apologies. Still not a Mellotronist though. Besides, I was really aiming my remarks at "GB" and no offense was meant to anyone on the list. One of the bands I was in played on his > show....just nuts! Wow, that's funny... Uncle Floyd being the fifth Beatle. Which band? For the other 99% of this list: Uncle Floyd is very weird show with a cult following on an obscure New Jersey cable TV station. It's a delightfully strange adult comedy show disguised as a children's show, sort of like "Peewee's Playhouse" in that sense. You can find clips on YouTube, and I highly recommend the "Best of Uncle Floyd" DVD. Mellotron connection? Sure... there's a David Bowie song called "Slip Away" that honors the Uncle Floyd show and Bowie's most famous song features Rick Wakeman playing Mellotron. -- Don -- Don Tillman Palo Alto, California don@... http://www.till.com
