Magnetic Tape Products: Two items

Magnetic Tape Products: Two items

2007-01-25 by marksblitz

Group:
I (thought I had) posted this item to the group yesterday, but it
made it neither to my inbox nor do I see it in the message archive at
Yahoo Groups; so unless it's so way-off topic that Don doesn't want
it, I'm going to try and get it up again.

Wait a minute, that didn't sound right.....

- - - - -

First there was this:

For those of you who still do your own recording, and haven't yet
heard "the news":

Quantegy Discontinues Magnetic Tape Products

http://prosoundnews.com/articles/article_4958.shtml

Then today, this:

ATR Magnetics, Now The Only US-Based Tape Manufacturer, Ready To Roll:

http://prosoundnews.com/articles/article_4966.shtml

I suspect at least one or two of us will find this of some
relevance....

Turns out that ATR is taking over Quantegy reel tape business, of
which there is a lot. Both 3M and Ampex shut down their tape units
because profits are not increasing, not because they are unprofitable.
As long as they make this unstable tape, new tape has to be used
instead of old tape reused. Long term bulk purchases go bad on the
shelf. If ATR had any sense, the would license the Emitape formula
and put that in their Quantegy boxes so they would have tape that is
as good as their machines.

I'm not sure I'm following you here; when you say, "ATR is taking over Quantegy reel tape business", I assume that you are referring to market share, insofar as (existing) manufacturing facilities for the two are quite distinct from one another, with Quantegy being located in Alabama and ATR being in Pennsylvania. I believe that ATR is using at least some of what was once BASF and AGFA's manufacturing equipment.

As far as the future of the Quantegy name and trademark, I haven't heard anything further on that yet. Perhaps you can shed some light if you have more information. (But keep it brief, I wouldn't want to go too long on this off-topic discussion!!!!) ;)

RMGI is now manufacturing what was the Emtec line, which IMHO, is a better
tape than Quantegy (i.e., StudioMaster 900 vs 456). Better high end, more
headroom.
Go to _http://www.rmgi-usa.com/_ (http://www.rmgi-usa.com/)
Haven't heard a thing about ATR/Quantegy.

My new supplier in L.A. has still some NOS and lightly used Quantegy 456,
Emtex 900 and 3M 996. _http://www.tapetape.com_ (http://www.tapetape.com)

Well said Gino. The reason we still use EMI tape is because it has to be
one of the world's most stable tape formulations ever. It never sheds, clogs
or deteriorates on the shelf. The famous Eddie Klein, ex Abbey Road Studios
and keeper of all things Macca has a lifetime's experience of EMI tape. When
they compiled the Beatles' Anthology, Eddie was regularly getting the master
tapes out of the vaults, all of which are EMI and they played immaculately
with little more than one pass through the tape deck and a soft cloth catching
any dust. And these tapes are over 40 years old in many cases.

We approached ATR two years ago to consider resurrecting on the EMI
formulation. Maybe it's time to suggest it once more.

Best,

Martin
