Thanks Rick...great stuff.
I had heard that the Epitaph collection was not
particularly well recorded - but this sounds better than I
anticpated.
And that 'tron...has that real edgy feel that is so
different from Pinder's approach, Mike goes for a kind of serene stratospheric
sound ...
The 'tron playing that I remembered KC for on the
first album is something I can only describe as having a slightly sinister,
often edgy buzz to it.
Really defies description (esp. by a layman like
me...).
A friend of mine back in those days said it had "tension".......
The recent BBC show described 'tron sounds ranging
from icy to warm.
Giles sticks and Greg Lake really add to
it.
Classics here ......like In the Court, Epitaph,
Mars, and 21st Century Schzoid Man.....
And if you want to hear both ends of the
spectrum...try this:

LIVE CONCERTS FROM THE PAST AND PRESENTCHECK OUT KING CRIMSON AT FILLMORE WESTLAST CONCERTWITH ORIGINAL LINE-UPA note: Some of this material is available on the DGM album "Epitaph", but it sure doesn't sound the same! Well worth a listen, especially in light of the current list discussions. Now here is some mellotron that will make your hair stand on end! If you ever wanted to know exactly what Ian played on mellotron for "Epitaph", here's your chance. (And doesn't the 60 cycle hum from the amps take you back?)It's also interesting to compare the use of mellotron by KC's original line-up with Pinder's use. The difference couldn't be more apparent here. Same instrument, same tapes, but holy shit. Is it better? I don't know. That's up to you to decide.Hope you also enjoy Giles' drumming. I don't think there's any drummer who is so wonderfully idiosync ratic -- or brilliant.Cheers,Rick
