ReGenesis

2002-07-08 by Paul Marshall

Evening all,

Saw ReGenesis at Sheffield Boardwalk last night doing 'The Lamb...', good
but IMHO not as good as The Mus... no, let's not open that can of worms
again.

Thought I'd ask what their keyboard player does for Mellotron sounds -
anybody know? His setup was Kurzweil K2000, Hammond XB-1, Korg X3 and Roland
JV-1080 but there were passable (in fact, pretty damn passable)
Flute/3Vln/8Choir sounds in all the right places). Could be samples loaded
into the K2000? (I do the same with an Akai S2000 'cos I'm afraid to take
M400 out of his cosy corner :o)

Regards

I can vouch for the quality of the Roland JV vintage card. The 3 violins and
flute are most convincing. It seems strange though playing the flutes and not
hearing that wretched top D! The choir is OK in only certain areas of the
keyboard, as it suffers the effects of pitch shifting due to the lack of
multi sampling. Making direct comparisons between the Roland and my EMI
tron. The tron definitely has more grunt, with each note having a character
slightly different from the notes either side of it.-Nice!
However, if I were gigging I would be tempted to use the Roland because it's
just so close,(particularly with a bit of upper-mid boost) and by the time
the sound has been buried beneath everyone else in the band, no-one, apart
perhaps from one or two on the list here wouldn't complain. Anyway, I
wouldn't want to risk damaging my prized keyboard.

Have we all noticed that re-genesis have been metioned but no reply from Andy Thompson ? Andy are you OK, this one would normally be right up your street with your connections with the band

Anyway I have the Roland Vintage module and your right it does a fine job when played in context , its also a bit lighter than a M400 although I would like to have the problem of owning one to move it but thats life at the moment

Anyway see you at the Festival Hall onthe 21st to see Mr hackett and friends .

Meet for drinkies in advance , e-mal to the usual address

Regards

John

Roland JV/M-VS1 (was: ReGenesis)

The Roland M-VS1 is essentially the JV card in its own box.

A while back I did a comparison between #805 and the M-VS1. Go here:

http://www.kleonard.com/kltunes/tunes.htm

...and scroll to the bottom.

The Roland has some interesting and usable sounds, but, yep, some of
the pitch stretching gets nasty, so you have to play within certain
ranges.

...kl...M400 #805 - still just a sample player

Dear All,

The Emu Classic Keys does a reasonable M400 emulation if programmed properly.

However mine has gone to be replaced by a Vintage Keys, which is even better as it has proper filters in it although the raw flute sample does not seem as good. The Vintage Keys came first so some tidying up of some of the samples seems to have gone on between models.

Hot tip: The Vintage Keys Plus (or having the expansion fitted to a standard unit like mine) gives another bank of useful sounds including samples of Chamberlin violins. These are different samples from the bank 1 M400 3 violins even though we know that the sound source was originally the same. Seems like the original instruments may have been sampled giving the difference in sounds (the Chamberlin is more strident...).
The other sounds in the Vintage keys are also worth having especially as there is now a proper set of filters to put them through.

All the best,
Norm

Hi Paul

But, despite my not working for them these days, more raw and exciting.
IMHO. :-)

Couldn't say for sure, but I suspect he uses the sounds from the JV-1080
'vintage synth' expansion board, possibly enhanced by the Kurzweil (does it
sample? I always assumed their stuff was all sample-playback). Doubt if it's
the Korg, anyway. :-)

The Pinder CD rom has both Chamberlin 3V's and MKII 3V's. The sounds
are from the same original source (3 ladies scratching their
instruments in Harry's bedroom in 1957). There is a huge difference
in sound between the Chamberlin 3V's and MKII 3V's. (Mostly
attributable to the different replay devices, I would think). It
seems that a properly adjusted Chamberlin can......sound really nice!
