Semi-conducted

Does anyone remember:
Everything You Always Wanted to Hear on the Moog
...but were afraid to ask for!
Semi-conducted by Andrew Kazdin and Thomas Z. Shepard

Hear Bizet - Carmen mp3 (and the rest)here:
http://www.fatbaron.com/everything/
Columbia hasn't re-issued this recording, so these 192kbps MP3's will
have to do.

I have that on vinyl....bought it when I went off to school in '71.
It always got peoples attention in the dorm...they dug it.
I just recently played it for my neighbor (he's big into keyboards and Moog).
He loved it.
Some cuts are down right wackywild.
I also played a Tomita album for him - "Snowflakes are Dancing"...he liked that one as well.

I can't even begin to imagine how much work went into those
recordings, especially considering that monophonic synths were used
and the sounds had to be changed every couple of bars. Wait, yes I
can...I once stumbled into the Studio C control room of Record Plant
in NY when Gershon Kingsley was doing a session. The 16-track had to
be stopped every couple of seconds so he could change the settings
on his Moog.

Imagine what Spike Jones could have done with a Moog band!

I also played a Tomita album for him - "Snowflakes are Dancing"...

Tomita ! One of the most amazing one-man tribute bands. His Debussy
recordings are something special.

The Carmen mp3 came from reel-to-reel tape 4-track 1/4 with no noise
reduction. The tape must have been in storage for about 35 years.
Between 1:15 and 1:25 you can hear print through. (Like a 1/2 second
pre-delay).

One thing to keep in mind about the Tomita stuff:

The strings and choral sounds are all Mellotron
through a Moog 904 filter. I was told that by Keichi
Goto at a NAMM show a few years ago and he was
Tomita's assistant for many years. Bob Moog was the
best man at Keichi's wedding.

He also told me that Tomita used to put BABY POWDER on
his tapes when he had trouble with them!!! Of course
this led to many disasters, but must have worked for
the moment.

Even with the tron being used, those records are
completely amazing.

Keichi taught me how to patch what Tomita calls "the
popo voice". It's a tricky patch that he used for solo
vocal type sounds like the one at the beginning of
Mars and Ballet of the Chicks in their shells.
