Web Site Update

Web Site Update

2006-12-13 by tron@blackcat.demon.co.uk

The Streetly Electronics Mellotron Sample Library found at
http://www.blackcat.demon.co.uk/tron/ has been updated again.

Have a look out for the new 'Louise Davis' Vibrato and Pizzicato
'Cellos, as well as the Glocks/Tubular bells split, the Rick Sanders
electric violin and

(drum roll)

* * B i r o t r o n C h o i r * *

Not the washed out and shitty sounding thing found on the M-Tron (or on
a Birotron, for that matter) but the *real deal* - a recording taken
straight from the original master tapes. I think this one is quite
wonderful.

I also have apologies to offer for some readers, notably those who
contributed samples to the site. The Demon web space is limited to 20Mb
(or 100Mb for a month) and so I have had to get rid of a couple of
longer samples, edit down some others and reduce the lot to 96kbps,
which is not my idea of joy but it's necessary. Apologies to you all,
particularly Norm Leete whose rather lovely Sad Strings sample was the
most hit upon thing on the site. (A bit like Norm, actually)

Lots more to follow. All comments welcome as ever.

I thought the Birotron choir was made originally from 2 Mellotrons,
holding down the same note on each machine and alternating them
while using volume pedal to make a "sustained" sound. If this is
true why put a Birotron choir on Mellotron tapes:)??

The Biro Choir is a completely unique set of recordings which we have edited to the best of our abilities. There were so many false starts, poor unisons, noises and fartings in general. however, once you add a little reverb the whole thing gels nicely.

Birotron tapes were FIRST mellotron tapes and then
they made their own sound sets. Great to know that
someone has those masters!!! Martin, do you guys also
have the other Biro recorded sounds? What would that
include?

Mark.

Hi Mark,
The masters are no longer with us as they were privately purchased. However, as I recall there was only the choir and maybe some odd violin phrases that hadn't already been coverted to 1" loop masters on very sheddy Ampex 456. The raw takes were long gone so there was nothing we could do to reconstitute the original takes. The necessary 'start' info was missing. I'll check out the violin phrases again as they may be of some use but that's about it. There was a whole collection of instruments that were NOT mellotron derived but nothing we could work with. We did try playing a loop master and it clogged the heads in about as much time as it's taken to type this!

The outtakes that you played me of the choir were actually quite funny.
They sort of go like this

AAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAaaaAAAHHHH...<splutter>...BWA!-HA!-HA!-HA!...etc etc

Because it's not true. Listen to the choirs again. They are different
sounds entirely.

Hi Mike maybe I'm thinking of how the Orchestron disks were made....I thought I had
read someplace that Dave Biro used 2 trons to make the Birotron tapes.
hey there's a thought....put Orchestron & Optigan on Mellotron tapes....

Something like that is described in the original Birotron patent:

http://till.com/articles/Mellotron/patents.html

But that doesn't mean the technique was really used on those tapes.

Yes, nothing like the 8 voice choir OR the boys choir. The Birotron
choir sounds like men with balls. Thanks for posting the sounds Mike.
