M300a strings samples?

M300a strings samples?

2006-12-09 by Mark

Hi,

I just want to sound like Woolly Wolstenholme (Barclay James Harvest )
without actually having to buy an M300.

I've got the M-Tron but it doesn't sound remotely like, either M300
strings or M300 violins ( the only M-Tron voices I like are the cello,
saxophone, boys choir and clarinet, generally it's quite disappointing).

As I understand it Woolly never changed banks on his M300,
I assume he could only mix one other sound with strings which I
believe were M300a.

I could be persuaded to buy the Mellotron CD and a software sampler.
Could that provide something close? I only play for my own amusement
and to inflict pain on others, so near enough would do.

I've looked at the Kontackt and Vsampler, how much memory do these
things need to perform?

Thanks

Mark

PS These days with Maestoso he has an M400 with remastered strings but
they don't sound as good.

PPS I am not trying to restart the samples vs real thing debate!

Hi, Mark.
I have the Pinder/Mellotron CD, run through an AKAI CD3000i sampler, and quickly discovered that the M300 samples are 300A strings from approx. notes 1-19, and then shifts an octave down with M300B strings from approx. notes 20-35 (it may be the other way around, but I haven't used the disc for a long time). It makes for some interesting voicings with that combination across the keys, but frustrating when you want one over the other across the keyboard. Do I have an aberrent disc, or are they all like this? At least I have a tape frame for my 400 with M300A strings/IM, Flute/M300B strings, and the same combination on Station 1, RH side of my MkII, but then I am a lucky S.O.B.

NO!!! They are not remastered at his very own request. The sound you love is the M300A violins through the spring line reverb of the M300 which Woolly used to great effect. You could back off the source signal and leave the reverb ringing. This is the sound of BJH. It grieves me to say it but the MTron can be made to sound very similar if you employ this same technique.

Martin's right!
I do have the remastered m300strings on my m400 and they sound stunning if you stick them into a pool of reverb. Lovey lovely sound, and the "remaster" which I know some people think "unthinkable" doesn't detract from the sound in any way. In my opinion it enhances it because you can play in many more keys, because the originals are only playable in but a few.

It's quite easy, really. Just affect his funny accent and complain a lot
about royalties.

That was funny!

my Emu E4K has 76 keys and you can just load in the Pinder CD M300 A
& B and assign the keyboard zones appropriately and you have the
full spread. So get a 76 or 88 note controller.

Thanks a lot Martin, I am new to electronic music, and don't understand all the terms. However I managed to find the reverb effect in FL studio which I use as the vst host for M-tron , It doesn't sound like Woolly yet but it does sound a hell of a lot better!

Can you explain what you mean by backing off the source signal?

Thanks

Mark
