Re: [Mellotronists] Strawbs trons

2006-06-22 by chris.dale@primus.ca

Hi John / All:
The MK V you're referring to was more than likely Rick Wakeman's proto-MK V (the double tron)
While I was researching the instruments' history, I was told that it was used by the Strawbs as well as Wakeman / Yes. I was also told it had been around the world 7 times on different tours.
At first I doubted this, but Dave Lambert confirmed the Strawbs used it. I had brought some pics of my trons to one of their shows to jog their memories about them. There was also discussion about whether they would be in need of one for their upcoming CD / tour promo performances here in Toronto which was a pretty big deal at the time. When Dave Lambert saw the double tron picture he recognized it and recalled playing it himself to fill spare time.

Subject: [Mellotronists] Strawbs trons

Hi all,

I had good fortune to spend a few minutes talking to Dave Cousins and John Hawken last night prior to a gig and I asked about the trons. Dave said they had the 2 M400’s painted black during most of the mid 70’s (one of which I have) but then said they also had one of the big twin manuals one’s as well. John nodded and said “oh yes that was the really heavy one”. I asked if it was a MkV and Dave yes he thought so. This was a bit of a surprise but unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to ask any more. Does anyone know if they did have a Mk V or MkII? If they did when did they use it? John is using the Pinder samples on stage but he blends them with something else.

Cheers

John
