RE: [Mellotronists] 'Tron Care

2006-05-17 by Chris Dale

Has anyone ever suffered mold problems with their 'Trons? I know that the 'Tron can be affected by humidity... but has anyone ever dealt with a mold situation?
I had a somewhat severe mold situation on the inside of my double tron, not to mention critter droppings, rust, etc., you name it, which is why I decided to have the whole cabinet refinished.
The cabinet was so filthy that it was hardly recognizable as a tron. It looked like it had been left outside for several years as it had peelings of black / white paint coming off, and from a distance would look like a cow!
The mold was caused by obvious drink / food spills from 7 separate world tours during the seventies, and worsened with whatever happened to it while it was in storage / passing through several hands of ownership from 1978 onward.
The mold was almost burrowing below the surface of the wood. To get rid of the mold I applied 99% isopropyl alcohol, and thoroughly brushed the affected areas but I was having the cabinet re-painted anyway so I wasn't concerned with using too harsh a solvent.
Jerry's suggestion of using tiny amounts of bleach and water is probably best though in your situation. With mine I pretty much had no choice considering esthetics and health reasons!
