Mellotronists

Thinking seriously about  purchasing a "real" mellotron and need 
advice.

First, trying to talk myself into it. Long time proghead, and use 
mellotron samples in about 85% of everything that I do. I can 
appreciate the real thing when it comes to instruments (owning a 
Hammond B-3, and several analog synths) but, how much difference in a 
mix are (mellotron) samples compared to a real one? I think that the 
vibe of a real mellotron would be inspiring, but how much sonic 
difference? 

Next, would you suggest buying a new one (Mark VI) or go for a used 
or refurbished one? 
I contacted a dealer and received a price for a Mark VI, three tape 
frames and shipping (two month wait) from Sweden. Ouch! Are there any 
other alternatives? (other dealers?) Is Streetly coming out with 
a "new" one?
