Mellotron/Chamberlin/Optigan Discovery Of The Week OH WOW

2004-05-18 by mellotrongirl

I don't know where to begin with this one, folks. It's not prog,
it's not psyche, but it's DRIPPING with all kinds
of 'Tron/Optigan/Chamberlin I'm sure--without mention in the liner
notes of even who the bandmates are.

Brand new on 6 Degrees, the band is The Real Tuesday Weld and their
CD titled "I, Lucifer" (loosely based on the novel) --
www.tuesdayweld.com

It comes off as some kind of Esquivel/Combustible Edison retro-
ersatz art deco black-and-white B-movie slease and camp accented by
gorgeous and seraph arrangements. I catch shades of Taco, White
Town, Morrissey, Patrick Warren, Mitchell Froom, and even J. J. Cale
(track 4) and Optiganally Yours (track 14). Great use of real flutes
and 'tron flutes, lo-fi Optigan organ, and odd quivvering choir
voices like those looped through Jefferson Airplane's "Never
Argue..." from their Bark album. Good use of what I suspect is
Mellotron vibes a la Truly's first album (by the way, their keyboard
player's new solo was kind of a disappointment...trumped up to be
like a long awaited Steve Fisk CD or sumpthin' right?)

What a great late night listen. Take the phone off the hook, don't
answer the door and get introverted with this one. Very crafty and
creative without getting dense and topheavy...in fact it can be kind
of dark and moody at times...unlike your typical Six Degrees fare of
latinosalsatechno.
