I read somewhere that they're supposed to be
bringing the old Roger Dean stage sets with them (but who knows whether that's
accurate). If true, maybe Wakeman *would* resume using his old machine
again but I may have jinxed the idea since I made samples of the
tapes in that machine for him.
On the 10CC bit, I'm pretty sure I remember us
discussing this on the list before - that there was a total of over 100 or so
voices. There's an interview with Lol Creme somewhere on the net where he
mentions this as well. There's also that cello sound which is created using the
Gizmo device, which sounds like it can be heard more clearly on 'Lazy
Ways' (on the 1976 album that followed "Original Soundtrack" -
can't recall the name of it right now)
I've also noticed other people's versions of that
same vocal sound that appear occasionally in both pop and
prog music (Billy Joel - Just The Way You Are, McCartney - close of
Take It Away, Steve Hackett - Voice of Necam, Camel - Tell Me)
Apart from tape replay devices, the only thing that
might get as close to that sound (in the old days) is perhaps a vocoder.
By the way - since we're on the topic of certain
sounds in music, does anyone know which keyboard is used for the high
pitched synth in the intro line of "In the Mood" by Robert Plant? (Is it an
ARP?) I never cared much for his caterwalling in Led Zeppelin, ( I thought
it spoiled some of the moods set by the music) but I have to say
that those high (strings?) are another
unique sound that kind of catches the listeners ear (albeit
briefly).
Still recovering from the effects of a severe
inner ear infection, (extreme dizziness - can't stand up and I can't even
look at my turntable!) I've been laying back watching the ceiling spin and
listening to a lot of music on CD and tape lately. In the Mood was on one
of my old tapes hence my question.
With the effects of the dizziness it's taken me
about 45 minutes to write this so I'll say goodnight.
