Tom Waits & Primus

2004-01-17 by sathington_333

Hey Everybody, I'm new here. Let Me just tell you how I first
heard of the Mellotron. I'm a HUGE Primus fan. If you haven't heard
Primus then, weell,... you're deprived. Primus's cd "Antipop" was
relesed in '98 (?) and the cd was a horrible departure from most of
Primus's stuff. The cd is regarded as one of Primus's lesser works.
It's an OK cd - but it just didn't sound like Primus. So anyway -
this lead to a 5 year hiatus. They are now FINALLY back and much
better than they were in the past 7 years. So anyway, the last track
on "Antipop" (besides the bonus track) Is called "Coattails Of A
Deadman". When I looked in the credits, it listed Avant Garde hero
Tom Waits on backup vocals and Mellotron for "Coattails Of A Deadman"
and of course - on the short intro to the cd (which basically just
took the first 20 or so seconds from the beginning of "Coattails...")
So anyways - the song "Coattails Of A Deadman" is pretty strange (in
a good way) and it is rumoured that the lyrics are about Kurt Cobain
and Courtney Love - although the song seems to take place in the
early 1900's or something. So the whole song sounds really old
fasioned, Edison style. And the song itself seems to be based around
Tom Wait's Mellotron line, which basically sounds like fuzzy old
Edison wax cylindar violins. It really actually sounds pretty cool
like the sountrack to a really old cheesy movie. So anyway - I didn't
know what a mellotron was at the time so I searched on the internet
to find out what it was. This was a pretty long time ago, but just
recently I felt like searching about mellotrons again since I am very
interested in them, and I am a musician myself. And eventually, I
wound up here. I think mellotrons are great, and I would really love
to own one. It's a shame that they are so hard to come by. I'm
crossing my fingers that a reasonable priced one will come up on ebay
or something. So anyway - I'm going to try adding "Coattails of A
Deadman" to the group database so you guys can listen. So - yeah -
tell me what you think.

        - Dan
