I've always loved the "preverb" effect, ever since I heard it on "Feel Flows"
when it first came out. If anyone has seen the movie "Almost Famous", Feel
Flows is playing at the end as the credits roll (if you want to hear an
example of the effect). I believe that REM also used this effect on UP. A
couple of years ago I was able to duplicate the preverb effect on mellotron
flutes using Cubase VST software. I think there are some digital processor
boxes with the preverb preset, but I'm not sure which ones.

On tape, they would have duplicated the original track, played the new track
backwards (somehow), apply reverb to it, then mix the effect back with the
original track. Probably quite a trick to do back then, now anyone with a PC
and basic digital recording software can do it.
