Mellotronists

All of the "non-stage piano" Kurzweils except the 1000 and the 1200 series,
including the 250, the 2000, the 2500 and the 2600 series offer sampling
options, and most of the 2500 and 2600 series came with at least the basic
sampling capabilities already installed.  I had one of the very first K1000
series when they came out and absolutely loved the sound and the response,
although from the internal architecture standpoint it was quirky, to say the
least.  I lost it in a home fire several years ago, and that is when the
Korg O1/W series came out and I acquired an O1/Wpro to replace the K1000.
The piano isn't as warm (although I did get the Keith Emerson piano program
for mine) but the instrument is still an absolute monster which I will never
give up.  The little X5D series has the same raw sample set, but is 64-voice
instead of 32-voice polyphonic, and saves money by having no sequencer and
lower-quality D/A converters, therefore being not quite as crystalline in
audio quality.  But, in a rock mix, they sound absolutely fantastic, and I
use ONE X5D to do all of my band's material. (See

lot to be said for traveling light and still being able to play all the
parts I want to without having to compromise.  I must admit, it looks odd to
see the one tiny keyboard onstage, and most musicians (at least the ones
that don't know me) really don't believe that there's no sequencing and no
recording playback taking place until I prove it!  I can set up in fifteen
minutes and start chasing girls with very little delay.
