New Marcos owner/member

My name is Donny Lang and I aquired a 1970 V4 powered Marcos last
October. I got one posting outto this group at that time, but days
later had a fatal hard drive crash on my computer, losing several
replys/contacts. I'm back on line and would like to here from other
owners who have fitted the Rover 3.5 or similar-based engines to the
steel-framed cars. I have aquired a '63 Buick 215 engine and a Rover
SD1 5 spd trans for my conversion. The car is also a rhd model, so I
am looking to convert it to left hnd drive. It appears that a spare
lhd '72 Spitfire steering rack will interchange. I am also looking
at using a Triumph TR8 rear axle to complete the conversion,
essentially duplicating a TR8 driveline in the car. The body will
be coming off the frame for the rework of the car. Some items I am
looking for is the enamel Marcos badge on the bonnet, and one or two
Marcos alloy wheels. Otherwise, the car is pretty complete.
If anyone else has done a similar conversion, or is working on a
similar project, I'd love to hear from you. Any leads on the parts
is appreciated. Thanks Indigo@...

Donny,
Your best source of information and parts for the conversion is Rory
at Marcos Heritage in England. Rory was involved in building the
cars, and will know if the V8 will fit in that particular model. His
web site is http://www.rory.uk.com/Marcos/marcos.htm
He can sell you the build documents for your car as well, as far as
the bonnet badge, Rory only has a plastic badge at this time, I've
asked him to notify me if he has the enamel one re-done.
I've bought misc pieces from him including a rear suspension part,
replacement side glass and a book on Marcos signed by Jem Marsh.
The service and shipping were great.
Is this the car from Wire Wheel with rectangular headlights that
needed work? If the Rover V8 won't fit you might consider putting in
a Ford 2.8 V6, I believe that would be a bolt-in exchange, and be
more likely to fit---if you want to explore that try the Yahoo Capri-
list Group site for more information, that engine has good low end
torque and can be modified easily for more HP, check out Team Blitz @
http://www.teamblitz.com/ for engine parts(they may have V4 parts as
well.

Ford 2.8 V6
PS. My car frame is engineered for the Rover V8, if you don't go thru
with your conversion I might be interested in your V8/transmission.
Also I know someone with a "frozen" Ford 2.8 V6 that could be gotten
for cheap and rebuilt.

Paul, thanks for the reply. I did get the red '70 Marcos from Hayes
at the WireWheel. Initial measurements look like the Buick engine
will fit, though it may be tight. A source of Rover 3.5
engines/trans is Ted Shumacker at TS Imports in Ohio. It seems he
dismantles TR8s and Rover 3500s/SD1s on a regular basis. I'll be
looking for a lot of other parts as the project progresses, in other
words, I'll be contacting Rory. Thanks! Donny

Welcome back Donny!

My '71 has the rectangular headlamps also of which I have two spares
if yours are not OK.

I'm curious as to the reason you want to switch to LHD. Half of the
fun of driving mine is the RHD. I was skeptical when I first
purchased it, but now wouldn't even consider swapping. Might want to
try it first if you already haven't.

Check out the "bookmarks" for other sites that might be helpful.
The "Marcos Maniacs" site has some links also.

Good luck!

Hello Donny,

I have a '69' with the 3.5 litre rover in it,I bought it like that so
most of the "engineering" was done for me , all I did was
replace what was there for engine and tranny mounts with my own design
The engine fits in quite easily ,if your car came with the V4 all
you are really doing is tacking on 2 more cylinders ,I know it's not
that simple !!!
I did put an electric cooling fan on to eliminate the engine driven
fan for clearance purposes.
I am at the point of putting my car back together , absolutely
everything that came off the car was glassbeaded and powder coated.
If you decide to strip the body for a respray look into soda
blasting, plastic pellett or walnut shell blasting I had mine done that
way and the result is well worth the cost ( approx $600 cdn)
If you would like to contact me offlist you can get me at
   3-d@...
         Cheers Dave #5577
p.s does anyone know the source of the interior door handles(the door
release handles not the plastic pull handles) and the exterior door
handles and boot release(they are both the same I think)

Dave,

The type of interior door handle used for the Marcos depends on the model.
Some cars have a lever-type interior door handle and some have an embedded
rectangular handle (as I do). The latter are from the MGB and the exterior
push button door and boot knobs are from the MGB as well (the boot lid I
think).

-Thanks Paul,
The interior handles are the lever type with a .375" square
reciever hole for the shaft.
Does it matter what year of MGB you get the door handles and boot
release from?
I have fitted 4 dual downdraft webers to my 3.5 Rover, I had to
lower the engine in the chassis by 1" which necessitated a custom flat
bottom sump and also had to machine the ram tubes but I do have about
an inch of clearance now between the hood and the top of the ram tubes
I don't know how much airflow I will get to the carbs though I
might have to come up with an air induction set-up maybe.
 Cheers Dave #5577

Hi Dave - I'm just kind of lurking on the Marcos site until I get the time
to send in some pics and a write up on my car. It sounds like you are
having a lot of fun and that's going to be one potent car with the Webers.
I'm running 3 45 Webers on my Volvo 6 and it goes pretty good, although it
is a lot of carb for that engine and it really doesn't like driving around
town much. I'll continue to watch your progress. Did you ever determine
what the tranny is?

Cheers,

Len

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: New Marcos owner/member

Hi again Dave,

I can't remember which car was the host for the lever type door handles
though I vaguely recall that they were from an earlier Triumph or MG from
the mid-60s. If you have an example and have a British parts supplier in
your area, I'd drop in and see if they recognise it. I can try looking it up
in my library of Marcos Owners Club magazines next weekend when I'm home. I
can't garantee I have that information but I'm sure I've seen a reference to
it somewhere. The later door handles came from MGBs built around 1970 though
I don't know how long they were in use. They're still available because I
was able to acquire a new one a few years ago through a British sports car
supplier in my area. The exterior knobs were of the same vintage and I'm
sure they're still available. I don't think there were any variations of
design.

I have plenty of room for my triple side draught arrangement though I had to
tilt the engine up a little on the right so that the carbs cleared the
frame. I sent Jeff Caraway a photo of my engine bay to be added to my car
profile and when he updates the site, you will be able to see how compact it
is. The small, round K&N filters easily fit into the space available and
there is plenty of open space to allow an ample supply of air. I've heard
that a restricted ram tube can have an adverse effect on the air flow into
the engine, though I don't have enough expertise in that area to know
whether the inch of clearance that you have would be classified as
restricted.

Good luck,

Paul Dransfield

Dave, Thanks for the repy. I'll be contacting you later for details on fitting the Rover engine. As far as your post script, the exterior door handles and trunk handle on my car are "borrowed" for an MGB trunk lid or hatch. Victoria British has them on sale right now for about $20.00 each.

Hello Donny,
;

Cheers Dave #5577
p.s does anyone know the source of the interior door handles(the door
release handles not the plastic pull handles) and the exterior door
handles and boot release(they are both the same I think)

Don, Thanks for the reply. I have already given up on trying to find the original type headlights my car came with. The remains on the car are for too far gone to restore. I was resigned to looking for some other setup to replace them. I would be most interested if you have extra servicable spares you would consider parting with.
As for the RHD to LHD conversion, your right, it is fun driving on the "wrong" side of the car. I have driven numerous RHD cars and it does tend to grow on you. The main reason for the conversion is I intend to drive this car on a regular basis. I commute nearly 40 miles each way to work on small two-lane roads with lots of slow traffic. Attempting to pass traffic is suicide in a RHD car. Another former Marcos owner relayed his experience using his Marcos for daily transport in South Florida. He recommended staying off two-lane roads if passing is necessary. Where I live, there is nothing but one narrow road with limited passing zones. Besides, the car can always be returned to its original form.
Please contact be about the headlights!

Good luck!
