Engine numbers

Engine numbers

2002-01-15 by Dan Orie

Hello again,
After receiving the build history of my Marcos back from Rory, it didn't
have any history on the engine/running gear numbers. With my other special
cars that I've had in the past (innocenti, siata, bond) the manufacturer of
the engine usually had a unique way of identifying or setting aside the
running gear numbers that they sent to the car manufacturer. Did
Ford/Volvo/Triumph etc. do that with the running gears that they sent to
Marcos? Or did Marcos make any special marks or numbers on the running gear?
Basically, how would any of us tell that we had the original running gear?
Thanks,
Dano

Maniacs . . .
Interestingly, on my Mantis with the Triumph 2.5PI engine, the engine number is recorded on the manufacturer's plate on the inside right fender, along with the chassis number. However, from the Triumph manuals, there is a tab cast into the block that is supposed to have the engine number on it. The tab is there, but no number, so presumably the number was ground off (or never put on in the first place). The engine number indicates that the engine was manufactured in the fall of 1970, which would fit with the timing for the construction of my Mantis.

Dano,

My "history" papers from Rory included the engine/trans serial
numbers. On the Essex V6 the serial # is stamped in the block on a
flat at the top/rear of the block just behind the right valve cover.

Mine has had one serial # crossed out and another added (the one Rory
lists). Don't know why!

Thanks, I double-checked with Rory after I received the history, but they
checked again and couldn't find anything.
I verified that my chassis plate had just the chassis number stamped on it.
Since my car was built for the USA, some states (I believe) tracked the
engine number, and I might be able to find it that way. However, since my
car has spent its entire life here in North America, I can say with almost
100 percent certainty that if it has an Essex drivetrain - which it does,
than it's original. I'm fairly certain that other than in specialty
low-volume cars, the basic Essex V6 - in its original form, didn't make it
over here, so it's highly unlikely that anybody would have found another to
swap, or get one from the UK as a replacement.
