1600 GT side window help.

2019-04-12 by GH356@...

Hopefully near the end of restoration on 1600 GT 5296 (woodie, LHD). Unfortunately, the right side window, and the window lift mechanisms from both sides were lost in action. Does anyone have spares, or parts that I could borrow for replication? Would be fine with converting to electric if that would be more viable. I have the window frames. Appreciate any help. I'm in Orange County, Southern California. Greg Haskin

If you want to convert to electric, I can send info on parts to use. The motor assy's are 1960's GM. The right motor is used on the left side and visa versa. Not sure if window frame is interchangeable.

Hello Greg,

I've just finished restoring chassis 5201. The window lifts are from an Austin A30. There is no winder mechanism. The glass sits on an adjustable spring loaded bar and you pull it up or push down using a small piece glued onto the glass.

I'll check to see if I have a photo of the mechanism.

Danny, thank you for the response. Good to learn the source of the window channels. I have photos, not real clear, of the lift mechanisms, but suspect I’ll need pretty specific dimensions to cob something similar. Again, thanks for the info. Greg

Larry, thank you. I would appreciate the info to convert to electric. Would be great if that solves my lift problem. Would still need to get the glass. Greg

If the parts are available, the glass can be cut and tempered by most local glass shops.I have the patterns for all 4 pieces. The left and right sides are totally different.I will check around and see what I can find.

Larry, any luck with parts numbers for the motors and/or the window pattern for the right side window? Any help would be much appreciated. If anyone out there is part way through a restoration, and would lend the lift mechanisms to me, I would happily make an extra set. It doesn't seem possible to duplicate the parts without a basis better than a couple of snap shots.

The motor is an early (1960’s) GM window motor and I can not find the info on the regulator.
I have a 1970 project car coming on Monday and will trace off the regulator full size and send it to you. Do you need the R.H. glass pattern or outer frame pattern? Send me your mailing address to my yahoo email.
Attached is a copy of the BUILD MANUAL for the early cars. It shows how to modify the lift but does not list it in the parts list. Rory might be of some help there.

Ah, Larry I wish I knew the answer. Frankly, I'm so frustrated that the otherwise fantastic car has begun to loose its attraction for me. It's been about 5 years in progress, and there is light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm almost ready to throw in the towel. It's a late '68 and totally stock. The restorer lost the glass on the right side, and the window lift mechanisms for both sides. Guessing the window shape won't change, but I don't know which shape to tell you. I do have the original frames. But have yet to figure out how they mount. I'll try the early corvette lift mechanisms. Again, thanks for your help. Greg

High Greg,
I know your frustration.
Take a picture of each side window so I can better understand the situation.
I just took delivery of a 1970 project Marcos. What a mess.

Hi Greg,
This may not be any help, due to distance but then again it may be and if so could help with the frustration:

I feel sure that Rory would try to help if you contacted him.

Greg,
I do not have any estimate on the cost. I hve to design the best way to build it as the original is made of press formed steel. Have considered molding it from KEVLAR or cutting, machining and welling the components.
I am trying to recourse the spring at the present.
Will keep you informed.

Hi,
I’m in a similar position to Greg as I’m missing one of my window lifters and the other is in extremely poor condition (pressed metal part is badly corroded).
Plan to try and fabricate a replacement set soon as some replacement springs I ordered on eBay 4 weeks ago from China finally arrived in the post today.

Will install the 16mm OD springs into the piece of tube, attach the window channnel to the tube with some metal brackets and then will just have the challenge of fabricating the arm that the spring acts against.

Springs came from eBay and are 16mm OD and 200mm long https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16mm-OD-Green-Heavy-Duty-Compression-Stamping-Mould-Die-Spring-8mm-ID-All-Sizes/283430128264?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=584449173757&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Greg

Thanks, Adrian,
We are thinking along the same track. I will order the spring and I have some 4130 aircraft, thin wall tubing. I am going to have the cam cut at my friends waterjet company. Would you like me to send you one?
As soon as I get the new belt for my plotter, I can send you the full size layout. Can you open ACAD drawings?
Where did you get the window glass channel?

Adrian,
Do you have the original spring out where you can measure the length? It looks like 8 inches in the tube so I would think it would be about 9” un compressed.

No need for a cam but thanks for the offer. I just plan to trace it out onto a bit of steel and then spend a bit of time with a grinder and sanding disks. As for the window channels I’ve bought a couple but none are as long as the originals but can’t see that being an issue.
So long as the new lift channel is central so there is an equal amount of glass at the end of it I don’t think I will have a problem.
The two different lift channels I bought were on eBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Beetle-Type-1-Window-Lift-Channel-873Vg0430-Front/301882320441?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
and
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Window-Lift-Channel-VW-Beetle-Offside-Right-1964-1967/283301741420?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
The second one is longer both have brackets that are no use but not an issue as I’m planning to cut off the brackets below the window channel anyway. As they are from a VW beetle you should be able to find them in the USA.

Not sure how much you have disassembled the window lifter but there is a number of inserts and a bearing in the cam that needs to be manufactured. I own a small lathe so my plan for tomorrow was to make replacements for these.
One thing I have just noticed is the springs I bought are not quite as strong. There is not much difference so just plan to get a slightly longer bolt compress the replacement spring more to compensate.

Larry,
Old spring is 8.5” long. Nearest replacement I could find on eBay was 200mm long ( just under 8”). As I mentioned early my replacement spring is slightly weaker but plan to use a 3” long bolt to compress instead of the orginal 2” one. Will also make the tube shorter or the inserts longer at the end of the springs to compensate for the spring being just over 1/2” shorter than the orginal.

I do have the original frames.. But have yet to figure out how they mount. I'll try the early corvette lift mechanisms. Again, thanks for your help. Greg

Thanks for all the info, Adrian.
I do not want to disassemble the unit that I have as it is on loan to me for dimensions and pattern. If I can help in any way, don’t hesitate to let me know.
BTW, the glass is not standard thickness (about .125 th) and tempered on the later models. Check before using a standard window channel, it may be too wide to hold the glass.

Good morning, Greg,
I have found most of the materials foe the lifts and thanks to I know where to purchase the springs. The tubing, plate, bolts and hardware add up to 65.45. I will get the cost for water jet cutting the cams and the welding of the assembly the first of next week. They are on vacation until Aug. 8th.
No charge for the blue print design and layout. There will be a 20.00/ hour final assy charge. Should not take more than 3 or 4 hrs.
If this is acceptable, I will order the materials in.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: 1600 GT side window help.

2019-08-22 by Larry Meadows

Good day, Greg,
I have the water jeted cams. They were only 30.00.
I have decided to make the assembly from carbon fiber. I have the plug made so I hope to make the molds this weekend.I am still waiting for the springs.
I have machined the bushes for the cams and have the followers cut.
The glass channels are still under consideration as to make them or keep trying to find the correct size on line. They have to be for 1/8” glass and I have been able to find only the standard 1/4” channels.
Will keep you posted as I proceed.
