Steve,Gel may seem easier to apply, however, the finishing would be a great deal more time consuming. The color coat (if you choose to apply clear gel over color) Would have to be color block sanded through the steps (180,220,320 then wet sanded with 400) before you apply the clear. Then after the clear is applied, you'd have to do it all over again only you would have to do a final wet sand with 600 then 3 stages of machine polishing. After all is said and done, if you should look closely at any boat that has the gel first in the mold, and over 3 years old and you will, at least in Florida and Hawaii, that the gel has started to shrink which reveals all kind of defects. This can be overcome by going through the sanding and polishing process all over again.True, a gel finish without the clear would be a little easier to repair, but the initial cost in materials and fime would be hard for me to justify.IMHO, I would rather work with the paint (albeit single stage or base coat clear coat) and have the job done and over with so I could enjoy the car.If you are getting paid by the hour, You could become quite wealthy doing a gel coat after the fact.Sorry for the rambling.

At long last the Marcos is in the first layer of polyester primer. Applied 2 gallons on the body, nose, doors and rear deck lid. One of the fiberglass material suppliers has colored gel coat. Not sure on the application process yet. Some use a DurTech special UV protector and gloss enhancer mixed in with the gel coat. Another uses a Duratech clear gel coat on top of the colored get coat. Curious what others think of gel coat Finnish instead of paint. I know how paint reacts, never worked with gel coat before. My concern would be the car would end up looking like a carnival ride. But.....the gel coat finish could be more durable and easier to apply. Hopefully the car will be red, still sanding and shaping polyester primer.Steve V.
