Hi Larry,

A while afgo one of the builders but a lot of before, and after pics on where he actually removed the body, painted the frame and built a stand for the body. Can you tell me who it was and where I can see these pics again

Steve,

The factory seal has a closed round seal and some other seals have a curved lip seal. On the curved lip, I had to add a 1/8 x 3/8" soft rubber strip behind the lip to make it meet the windscreen post when the door is closed.

Steve I just finished my 3L restore. Seal from Rory was a two part. First the u shaped to trim the opening then a seperate D shaped rubber that is then glued in place. If you email them they will send a few pictures of how to install. If no luck let me know and I can resend what they sent me.

Depending on where you live, The least expensive solution would be to order the seal from Rory at Heritage. 

I used the Fur flex in the last Marcos I did for Ron McCleod, that he purchaced from a supplier he deal with. He wanted the seal to match the interior (blue), so used the blue covered seal.

When installing the seal, the starting and ending point is the square, lower front corner of the opening. 

There should be a 3" piece if vinyl trim that is face glued to the 'down' lip of the aluminum door sill trim (back side), That closes out the gap between the sill and the pinch weld where the seal goes. The vinyl is held by the seal.

Hi Folks,

I'm making progress putting my 1970 3000GT back together. I'm ready to start putting the interior back in, but I don't have the original seals around the door opening so I don't know what to buy. There's a typical seam that goes all around the door opening. The seam is overlapped with the interior trim, so I expect that it should have a "U" shaped pinch channel like furflex, with a rubber seal on one side. The thing is, there are thousands of different profiles, and if I get the wrong one, either the seal woun't work or the door won't close properly. Can someone either point me to a supplier of the right seal, or a photo or drawing? Also, I found one piece of flat sponge rubber about 1" wide by 1/3" thick that looks like it fits at the top front edge of the door, just below the door glass. I'm not sure if this was an extra seal at this point to stop rain that runs back along the bonnet, or if this seal should have gone all the way around the door opening. If the latter, then I assume there was still some sort of pinch trim to cover the seam.

Here's some pics of the seam with the interior vinyl overlapping it, plus the bit of rubber seal that I found.

Hi Juan - and the others out there.
I am Geir Olav in Norway and I did a full resto on my car some years ago.  I didn't build a special stand for the body though, and I bought the "standard" rubber seals from Rory in England for my project.  It doesn't seal the water completely out though, but that is not because of bad rubber seals.  More due to the fact that the door itself is too far away from the rest of the body in due to lack of adjusting possibility and bad fit from the factory.

I am Geir Olav in Norway and I did a full resto on my car some years ago. I didn't build a special stand for the body though, and I bought the "standard" rubber seals from Rory in England for my project. It doesn't seal the water completely out though, but that is not because of bad rubber seals. More due to the fact that the door itself is too far away from the rest of the body in due to lack of adjusting possibility and bad fit from the factory.

Geir Olav and Juan,
Is the door seal a round bulb seal or the sort of lip seal?
I ordered my seal from J.C. Whitney in Chicago. It is the round bulb type. The factory seal leaves spaces on the driver side (Left). The only problem, The larger seal makes it harder to close the door, but it seals tight.
If you decide to change it, I will send you the part number.

Hi guys,
It is worth doing some research on door seals and trims.  Although the ones that are sold for a particular vehicle may be the correct pattern, the materials used today may not be similar to the original specifications.  I fitted new seals around the doors of a 1953 Austin A30 I just finished restoring but the material is not compliant and the doors would not close.  I eventually sourced something for a Mini door surround that did the job and would compress enough for the door to close.  I still haven't found a suitable replacement for the seal that fits the door itself!  If the door gap is too large for the original pattern of seal to keep water out, there may be others that can be substituted without compromising originality of appearance. It is worth doing some research on door seals and trims. Although the ones that are sold for a particular vehicle may be the correct pattern, the materials used today may not be similar to the original specifications. I fitted new seals around the doors of a 1953 Austin A30 I just finished restoring but the material is not compliant and the doors would not close. I eventually sourced something for a Mini door surround that did the job and would compress enough for the door to close. I still haven't found a suitable replacement for the seal that fits the door itself! If the door gap is too large for the original pattern of seal to keep water out, there may be others that can be substituted without compromising originality of appearance. Hi folks,

Time for me to chime in seeing as I started this thread.  I had some left over door seal from a Jensen Interceptor that had a sealed tube rubber seal on the side.  This is like the seal described in an earlier reply.  I tried a bit and it looked like it would work.  By luck, I managed to track down a Marcos owner who let me come and look at his car last weekend. Sure enough, it had the same sort of seal, although in vinyl, not furflex.  I headed off to the local vintage door seal shop, Bill Thompson Auto Rubbers in Bayswater, Vic, and he had two that look virtually indentical.  I squeezed them to find which was softest, so there's no issue closing the door, and grabbed 7 metres. Total cost, $70! I was expecting it to be over $300. The vinyl seal is a fraction of the cost of furflex.  The interior is almost done now.  I will post some pics in a couple of weeks.  You can sit in the driver's seat and prentend it's a going car.  It's 15 to 20 years since you could do that!  I'm pretty excited by the prospect of having this car back together in another month.  I haven't managed to get it started yet, but will have another go at it today.
