Not a Marcos, but it is British...

Not a Marcos, but it is British...

2004-02-17 by Paul Weidner

To All,
Just wondering if anyone on the list has experience with Austin
Healey Sprites.
I recently picked up an old race car 1959 Sprite with a Speedwell
bonnet, low cut doors & Brooklands windscreens from Hayes at Wire
Wheel Classics, pix on my profile if anyone wants to see it, anyway
I'd appreciate any advice on rebuilding it (will use for street and
mild race/autocross), the body is good, but the mechanicals will all
need to be done, and I will also be looking for a hardtop, any
advice appreciated, engine, suspension, clutch etc... I do belong
to the local Austin Healey club which will help, but a lot of the
members of this list seem to be real mechanical --- so thats why I'm
bringing it up here.
Thanks,
Paul

The green one? Interesting. You've got the LBC disease bad! I
think Bob Magnotti has a RHD Sprite or did have.

Don,

Is there any cure for the LBC disease? Not that I want it, but if
there is a cure I need to hide it from my wife :-)
I also made my Insurance agent speechless with this purchase:
When I called as a joke I said "This 12 step program just isn't
working" (I meant in regards to buying cars...) dead silence on the
other end... I realized what he was thinking and then explained "I
bought another car".

Paul,
I too have the "little British car disease". I looked at your car late last summer, just because it was so different. I had no interest in buying it, I have too many as it is, though it was interesting! I already bought two project cars from Hayes back in late 2001, a Marcos and a TVR. I also have two Bugeye Sprites and a lot of parts for them. I am building one for the same purposes you are, the other one will be to sell as a decent driver. I can't tell you how to build your car, but I'm using a 1275 (bored 0.120 over for 1380), alloy big valve head, 5 speed transmission, disc brakes, etc. It probably wouldn't be too competitive in class with these modifications, but it will be a blast for street use. Contact me if there is anything I can help with. Good Luck!

Donny,
Thanks, the car will be sitting for a while B4 I start on it ($$$ and
deciding on mods), this is the "simple" type car that I'm using to
improve my mechanical skills, what did you think of the cars
condition when you looked at it? Thanks for the offer of help, I
will take you up on it. BTW --- I've heard good & bad on the 5 speed
conversion have you driven both?
Thanks,
Paul

Garry,
Please email me with details of the engine/trans, I'm looking for
daily driver/low speed punch(autocross) use rather than a peaky race
engine, I was planning on a rebuild but if the price was right... As
for the hardtop I was told by the local vintage racing group that a
hardtop would mean I could get by with a lower rollbar...
Once again, I won't be starting this project for at least 4 months...
Thanks,
Paul
PS, Sounds like Marcos and Sprites go well together...

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Not a Marcos, but it is British...

2004-02-18 by Bob Magnotti

Don,

Hello to all, sorry for the long time in lurking
stages. Long story that can be told latter. I
recently moved to SW Virginia, had surgury,
semi-retired, etc...

I still have the Marcos which is so close to
completion I can almost imagine driveing it again. As
for the Sprite, yep still have it also, have owned it
and aboty 20 other Sprites since 1973. I raced the
Sprite in H-Production in the '70s and have since
converted to RHD and a 5 speed trans. My modified
street engines are 1275's set up to about 95 hp. As
best I can tell the Sprite handles better than the
Marcos and does not require the finess needed in the
Marcos. The Marcos is definetly a smoother ride. Both
cars have been laid up for well over a year with
delays in Marcos completion driven by my recent health
issues.

I hope this is a trend that the Marcos group gets
interested in Sprites as they are one of the most fun
cars to drive - they also upset owners of much faster
and powerful cars at the track because of the
handleing.

BOb M.

Hello Garry,

I see you are heading to or may be in Florida. I wanted to see if you might have the
3-way fuel line fitting for my 3-Litre Ford. It is the piece that goes between the fuel line coming from the pump, branches off to the carburetor, and also back to the tank.
I would also like to check on the price and availability of a new distributor. The numbers off the one I currently have are FO MO CO 12127 C8DH A.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Rick,
I cannot find an original union but we may have one that would work in
the Chevron parts bin.
If I find one I will try it for size first. I have a used original
Ditributor and can supply it with a new cap and rotor. These are the wear
items anyway so it should be as new. Let me know, other wise I will put it
on back order for the next shipment.

Hello Garry,

If you think you might be able to locate a new distributor on your next run that would be great. I would like to start with a fresh one. I would also like to order an extra cap, rotor, points, and condenser for it as well. I will also need a speedometer cable as my original one is singing the blues and does not have long to live. I am still about 2 months away before spring shows itself so timing is not a problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hello Garry,

Yes, the union arrived okay. Along with the distributor, I also need a speedometer cable and another inside door handle. I am not sure if Marcos used many different styles of inner door handles but if so let me know and I can send you a picture of what I am looking for.

Thanks again for your help!!

Hi Rick,

Send me pictures of the door handle and also specify which speedo cable you
need.If you have a picture of your old one that would be great.

Garry
