Marcos Martina

2003-10-08 by gtm_andy

Hi all. I have just purchased a Marcos Martina which is only part
built. It was started in 1993 and has not been touched for the last 8
or so years. As there is no engine ( or dash, interior or glass
etc ) in the car, I am trying to decide what engine to use. The
engine mounts are for the V6 Essex, but as this engine is getting a
bit dated now, I am wondering about utilising something a bit newer.
I have been told that the rover V8 bellhousing is too large for the
tunnel ?. What about the granada 2.9 V6? Or has anybody fitted any
other even more modern engine - Cosworth etc.
I am also looking for any pictures of completed Martinas for ideas
about trim, under bonnet positioning of bits and pieces etc.

Many thanks in advance for any information or help anybody can give.

Andy.

In the states the only engine change that I'm aware of is Andrew Jones, in the LA area. When he brought is car to the states he had re-power for smog registration. I think, he shipped the car over with out an engine then installed a Ford SVO 4 cylinder engine, less the turbo, to reduce head build up. You would need to get the details and the alternatives he looked at when he was getting his Martina on the road from him.

Hi, I did indeed bring my Martina to the US and fit an engine in over here. This was more to do with saving money on car tax and import duty than just smog regs.
I have photos from my build and can take any more specific photos you might need to help in your build. Just let me know what you need. I also still have the build manual around here somewhere. Though very limited, it may be of some help. I must say that when I was building it back in the UK I made many visits to the factory to ask questions and look at cars in process in order to figure out what on earth the manual was trying to illustrate!
The worst moment was towards the end, just before trimming out, when I looked at the check list and one check item was "fit engine with modified sump". Panic, what modified sump??? There was no mention anywhere in the build of the need for a modified sump. A call to the factory revealed that the standard sump would be the lowest point on the car. Not a healthy situation...
Anyway, e-mail me and let me know what you need and I will try and help.

Cheers

Andrew

p.s. where are you located?

Hi again,

Many thanks for your email - it's good to know someone who has been
through what I'm about to tackle.

I think one of my first jobs it to tackle the pedal box. As the seats
have no adjustment, I believe it is best to make an adjustable pedal box.
How have you done this ?

I you have any photos of the interior, that would be very helpful as I'm
trying to decide whether to buy an interior from Marcos heritage, or have
one made.

If you have any information on the drop glass frames and whether it is
possible to fit electric windows, that would be helpfull too.

This will be a reasonably slow build as I intend taking my time and doing
it right. I hope you don't mind the odd email for advice.

Thanks again for any help you can give.

Best regards

Andy.

Welcome,
I can send you detail drawings for the pedal carrier and you can have it fabricated at any rputible metal fab shop. I made the drawings from my carrier when I diss-assembled it to bead blast and refinish it. I navent been able to source the original U joint connector that connects the carrier through the fire wall, am in touch with Herritage about it.

As I don't know where you are, and I am in Scotland posting a copy may or
may not be possible.

Many thanks for your help

Andy

Andy,

Do you know anyone that has 'AUTOCAD' drawing program on their computer? If so, I can send you the drawing file and you can plot it out full size. I will try to scan it an send it. I don't have real good luck with scanned drawings.

Hello Andy
You can make the universal joint quite easily.
I used two air cylinder piston rod clevis ends, with a twisted piece of flat steel, drilled with two holes to fix them together and allow them to articulate. I can send you a drawing if you wish. or if you prefer I should be able to send you a picture of the original plastic one.

Many thanks for all help about the pedal box. I managed to buy an
electrically adjustable one off ebay. It came off a 2000 Marcos GT and
hopefully will fit without too many problems.

Best regards

Andy.

It fit's straight in. No problems. I'll need to make an "L" bracket to hold one end, but it's ideal. Also a snip at £77 +vat and P&P - a total of £102. Can't believe my luck. Also managed to get a brand new walnut dash for the Martina off ebay for £45. +vat and p&p. It's been my lucky week !

Many thanks for your help.
