Rubber

Rubber

2003-03-12 by dave barton

OK Guys down to the nitty gritty.........on the steel chassis cars
was there a rubber gasket on all the members that the body shell sat
on. When I removed the shell from the frame origionally I do remember
a draft seal kind of foam on a couple of tubes but not on all........
maybe it had decintegrated over the years.
Also, obviously there is a trunk seal that sits in the trough
surrounding the "boot" sorry!.....is there supposed to be a seal
where the bonnet comes down and sits in the slot just in front of the
windshield as well as where it comes down and meets the top of the
fenders. As far as the door seals go I will be using a generic bubble
seal as used on the 80's and 90's GM's.
One other question does anyone know the origin of the electric
window cranks I am in need of one.........on the suybject of interior
door release handles I have an excellent source of British parts up
here in Canada and I have been told that the Ford Prefect possibly
used the same handles as the Marcos, I should find out if they will
work by next week if they do I will let you guys know .
Pics of finished painted shell to follow.......finally
            Cheers Dave #5577

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Rubber

2003-03-13 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi Dave,

There was some sort of cushioning material placed between the chassis and
body but I don't know what it is/was. I would imagine (at least I would
hope) it would not be made of foam because that would hold moisture and
promote rust.

There is a broad cushioning material where the bonnet rim meets the slot in
front of the windshield. I replaced mine last year with something from
Canadian Tire but it doesn't do the job properly because it's too thin and
compresses too easily. The original was made of a tough dense foam but it
was 20 years old and looked worn. I'm looking around for something more
appropriate but haven't found anything yet.

The motors used for the electric windows are from a Jaguar (Mark X I think,
I'd have to look it up).

The interior door handles on the later of the earlier cars come from the
MGB. I replaced one after the plastic handle snapped a few years ago,
sourced from Penninsular in Oakville.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Rubber

Dave,
Having been under mine quite a few times when removing/replacing the gearbox, I did notice that there were rubber "pads" about 2" by 3" where the body sat on the frame. Can't recall if all points had them, but I suspect so.
My "boot" seal was just a u-shaped strip of fairly hard rubber. Like the door seal without the rubber?? I had nothing in the trough. I put the GM style rubber seal around the lip of the trunk body, not the lid.
Are the door handles you mention the straight piece of chrome? Like in this pic?:
If so, I need one!
Thanks,

Don
Yes that is the handle ,the little lever that opens the door from
the inside........I don't have anything to compare it to because they
were both missing from my car.........as I said in an earlier post I
have found a place that has quite an inventory of British parts and
a guy who knows about them,I will let you know if the handle works
BTW the TVR 2500,s used a lever type handle on their doors also,
maybe that might be sourced easier

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Rubber

Hi Dave,

I AM referring to the interior door latch release. In my car, it's
rectangular in shape with a black plastic insert which pivots at the rear
edge. It's off an MGB. Believe me. Maybe your car is a little older and uses
something else.

Mine's got a curved chrome handles that are screwed into the
mechanism at one end and it looks (from Rimmer Bros site -
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/) very much like the Triumph Vitesse one.

Cheers.

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Rubber

2003-03-14 by ronald.mcleod@aspentech.com

Dave . . .
My Mantis also had the foam rubber pads or strips between the fibreglass tub and the tops of the steel frame rails. The hardened screws went through the fibreglass, through the rubber, and into the steel rail to hold it all together. On disassembly, it appeared to me that the rubber strips did little other than attract and hold moisture to accelerate corrosion of the steel. When the car was reassembled, I did not bother with the rubber strips. I have not noticed any increased road noise, rumble, or vibration from not having the strips between the body and the chassis.
Door seals: As part of my restoration, generic GM bubble strips were used. The problem is that the North American seals are noticeably fatter than British ones, and as a result, my doors and rear-quarter swing-open windows didn't fit very well. After a while, slamming the doors closed crushed the rubber strips down enough that the doors are now OK. If you have a small cross-section sample of the seal strips, Martin MacGregor out in Ancaster, near Hamilton, can obtain an exact match for you. http://www.macgregorukcarparts.com/

Re: Rubber

2003-03-17 by dave barton

Hi Paul
I can picture what your release handle looks like now......I
have a 1969 and the handles on it were a long thin chrome piece about
4" long and about .5" in diameter........the ones off the Prefect I
was speaking of didn't work but while I was away this weekend I came
across a British restoration shop in Sarnia and I picked up 2 handles
which were listed as Healey 3000 handles....they will work nicely ,
they are shaped a bit different to the ones I think I needed but they
don't look out of place. I was also able to get a new clutch slave
cylinder that I had been looking for....it was off a 1970-76
TR6........the 4 speed trans is a Rover so go figure that one
          Cheers Dave #5577

2003-03-17 by dave barton

         Cheers Dave #5577
