FW: [MarcosManiacs] Marcos Glass.... revisited

FW: [MarcosManiacs] Marcos Glass.... revisited

2002-09-05 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi again guys,

I spoke today with another representative of Pilkington Classics from the US
who is tasked with importing windshields for classic cars - Jaguar, Lotus,
Opel etc. He sent an enquiry to Pilkington in England to determine if he
could perform a similar task for the Marcos and found that the rights to the
tooling was owned by the Marcos Owners Club. They paid for the tooling and
control the rights to the screens and only they can order screens from
Pilkington. The screens ordered in this manner would have to be shipped by
them or their representative, meaning us. Pilkington will not facilitate the
process for us.

There is the option of having new tooling performed here but that process is
now performed in Mexico. Front and rear screens would have to be shipped to
the factory in Mexico from which they would make the molds. There is a
US$5000 deposit required (not CAN$5000 as I noted earlier) before the
process can be started and the factory would then have to determine the
final costs based on the complexity of the job. There would then be a 20
screen minimum order for each of the front and rear screens. The rep told me
that, based on the photos I sent him, the rear screen would be quite tricky
to manufacture from his experience. The gist of the matter is that it
wouldn't appear cost effective for us to go this route but that's not for me
to finally determine.

The Pilkington rep said that another option would be to go through a company
called Win Manufacturing in Elmira, New York. This company advertises in Old
Cars Weekly magazine that they manufacture windshields. I have an 800 number
for them. I'll call and see what response I get and pass the information
along. After that, someone else is going to have to carry the ball from here
on.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's an easy solution to the problem
and it might be better to go through the Marcos Owners Club in the end,
especially for the glass rear screens. The company I used for shipping the
Coupe and Mantis screens could be used to distribute the order
appropriately. It's time consuming but it produced the desired results for
me.

Hi guys,

I spoke today with a representative of EOF Pilkington Classics which owns
the glass manufacturing facility north of Toronto. During the initial part
of our conversation, he told me that they would be willing to undertake the
project but there was a prerequisite requirement for 20 units of each type
and a deposit of CAN$5000 before they would undertake the manufacture of the
molds. However, when I mentioned that Pilkington in England had molds of
both screens, he proposed talking to a counterpart in the US who sourced
hard-to-find items and suggested this colleague might be able to sort
something out. I sent him photos of the front and rear coupe screens to
assist in the search and hopefully he will get back to me soon. There was no
available estimate on cost at this stage but I hope to be able to get one
soon. As soon as I hear anything further, I'll pass it along.

Hi All,
I have heard back from Hayes on the Polycarbonate rear windows.
Here is the information he passed along:

Price $250.00 each
Shipping (in the US): around $45.00 each

Hayes much prefers these as they are much more forgiving and easier to work
with than a glass rear window.

To re-cap other quotes>>>>>>

Marcos Heritage Spares prices:
Rear Glass Screens $345.00 each
Front glass $452.00 each
Rear Perspex $145.00 each

Shipping from the UK to one destination for 5 fronts and 10 rears $3216.00
(rough estimate)
Customs: ??
Shipping inside of the US to each destination: ?? (would most likely be more
than the $45.00 Hayes quoted since the glass is heavier).

Paul Crocker of the Marcos Club:
Rear Glass Screens $220.00 each (rough estimate)
Front glass $267.00 each (rough estimate)

Shipping from the UK to one destination for 5 fronts and 10 rears: ??
Customs: ??
Shipping inside of the US to each destination: ?? (would most likely be more
than the $45.00 Hayes quoted since the glass is heavier).

To get the items from Marcos Heritage or through Paul Crocker, we would also
need someone here in the US willing to part them out and ship them to their
individual destinations.

So, here are my questions to the group:
1.	Is anyone still interested? Drop it or continue????

2.	Paul, can we contact the glass company in Canada and get estimates?

3.	Is it worth contacting the glass company in the UK (Pilkingtons), if
we will face the same sort of shipping charges?

Everyone that was interested, please LMK your feelings on this issue!

Jeff

FW: [MarcosManiacs] Marcos Glass.... revisited

2002-09-05 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Back again guys,
I just spoke with Drew Guild of Win Manufacturing, a major fabricator of all
types of windshields and laminated glass products for current and classic
autos. I discussed our needs and got the following response. They would be
prepared to set up for and create Marcos front and rear screens at a cost of
US$7500 for ten units for each of the front and rear. Each screen would
therefore cost US$750 or CAN$1200 plus shipping, so it isn't cheap. I got my
last windshield through the Marcos Owners Club last year for less than
CAN$1000 delivered to my door.
Below is the contact information for WIN Manufacturing:-
WIN Manufacturing
1120 Magee St.
Elmira New York
USA 14901
Toll Free: 888-935-0111
Tel: 607-734-4009
Fax: 607-734-4519
Contact: Drew Guild
As a final comment on this exercise, based on what I've learned over the
last few months, I would still probably have obtained a new screen through
the Marcos Owners Club, because I know they fit properly and the price is
more reasonable. Going through Paul Crocker at the MOC, with the numbers we
need, the delivery time could be less than 6 months because Pilkington would
probably manufacture the screens right away rather than delaying as they did
with me and Ron. Once manufactured, they could be shipped door to door in
less than a month, as they were in my case. Someone would have to coordinate
the collection of funds etc. but if action was begun now, they could be
available by next spring.
