everyday car

2002-06-27 by guess...

HI all

I'm new to this usergroup, but was wonding if any of youcould answer a few of my questions. .

1) Is the Marcos an everyday car, By this I mean if maintained well able to do 12,000 miles + a year?. Or is it just a Sunday runabout (lotus 7 esque)

2) Has marcos gone out of business recently?. . .I read in this month's "which kit magazine" (july 2002) that they had, Article is on page 81

3) I have about \ufffd20,000 to spend and am looking at 2nd hand Mantara or Mantis or LM. . What are the Service/Maintenance costs annually of owning such a car (considering my estimated milage)

any help would be useful

Thanks in advance Martin

Many people do run them everyday. I'd recommend a coupe (if you can
find one) if you want an everyday car in the UK, just because they're
more watertight.

The Marcos who made the Mantara(y) and Mantis has gone out of
business, but there's a thriving Marcos support business and Jem
Marsh announced (last Sunday) that a new car, with the Marcos name
will be available soon.

Can't answer this one - Probably similar to a low-end TVR, I'd
imagine (unlike the Cerbera and Tuscan, the engine's are not bespoke
on a Marcos - V8 Rover on the Mantara/LM and Ford Mustang V8 on the
Mantis) - If you can live with the looks, the Mantis is lovely to
drive and would be easily civilised enough for everyday use.

A little, anyway.

Check my site (or my recent-ish post) for the URL of the UK Marcos
forum - there are some Mantis/Mantara owners posting on there.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Martin,
I used my Mantula Spyder for 2 years as my only car, covering about 28,000 miles, with very little trouble. The only problems being a leaking water pump and the battery dying while at Donnington (luckily one of the sponsors that day was National Breakdown so there was about 150 breakdown trucks there so I was able to get a jump start).
The one major problem is chassis rust. As the chassis are only powder coated small chips in the powder coating will allow water to seep between the coating and the steel and will rust before you see any visible signs. This is obviously made worse by salt in the winter. However, as long as you keep the chassis clean and touch up any chips on a regular basis this should not be a problem.
As the mechanicals are mostly Ford and Rover parts are relatively easy to get and not too expensive so running costs are not that expensive. My 3.9l V8 (190bhp)would average 28mpg on a run and I found it almost impossible to dip below 20mpg unless I drove like a complete maniac.
Unlike Mark I would recommend going for the Spyder. From what I know some of the coupes leak as much as the spyders but you don't have the benefit of being able to put the roof down on those few sunny days we get in this country.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Neal
