3) I have about £20,000 to spend and am looking at 2nd hand Mantara or Mantis or LM. . What are the Service/Maintenance costs annually of owning such a car (considering my estimated milage)

Hi Martin,
I used my Mantula Spyder for 2 years as my only
car, covering about 28,000 miles, with very little trouble. The only
problems being a leaking water pump and the battery dying while at Donnington
(luckily one of the sponsors that day was National Breakdown so there was about
150 breakdown trucks there so I was able to get a jump start).
The one major problem is chassis rust. As the
chassis are only powder coated small chips in the powder coating will allow
water to seep between the coating and the steel and will rust before you see any
visible signs. This is obviously made worse by salt in the winter.
However, as long as you keep the chassis clean and touch up any chips on a
regular basis this should not be a problem.
As the mechanicals are mostly Ford and Rover parts
are relatively easy to get and not too expensive so running costs are not that
expensive. My 3.9l V8 (190bhp)would average 28mpg on a run and I found it
almost impossible to dip below 20mpg unless I drove like a complete
maniac.
Unlike Mark I would recommend going for the
Spyder. From what I know some of the coupes leak as much as the spyders
but you don't have the benefit of being able to put the roof down on those few
sunny days we get in this country.
