I have actually got the rack out of my car in pieces on the
bench
..........you are correct in assuming that the spacers go between the
inner knuckle and the pinion............the spacers on mine are
approx. 1" long and are of light guage round tubing.
BTW if the pinion and rack grooves line up and do not show any
excessive wear you do not necessarily need to replace the rack.
Adjusting the preload on the pinion and on the inner ball joint
will take any "slop" out of the steering...........also you might want
to look into "poly" bushings to replace the rubber ones if they are
"used up" that will also tighten up the steering feel.
Haynes publishes a manual on the GT6 which is where I have got most
of the info from for the front suspension , brakes and steering
