Maniacs . . .
Thanks
for all your suggestions. After receiving the registered letter, which
very much had a FOAD tone to it, I called the insurance agent and explained
about the Mantis, and followed up with an e-mail. Heard nothing for a
week, so phoned the agent, and got a different story. This time it wasn't
a racing car, the concern was the high cost of repairing the Mantis if it was
damaged. So I pointed out the easy availability of mechanical parts, the
fibreglass construction (gave as a reference the local shop that did the
restoration a few years ago), again all confirmed by e-mail. Still no
response, not even an offer to help me find alternative insurance for the
Mantis, so I've nuked them. I have moved all my home and auto insurance to
State Farm. The Oakville agent is Wayne McGill, who happens to be a true
enthusiast who owns 6 classic cars including a TR6, a Triumph Herald, a
Jag, and an early Mustang. Problem solved.

Do they have a picture of your car? It would be obvious, if they had a set
of appraisal photos like the ones I had done last year, that you car isn't a
racing car. You should let them know that Marcos reused the name for a later
model. In fact it should be possible to send them pictures of the two so
they can readily see the difference.
I'm insured through The Personal Insurance company. I deal with them
directly and have done since 1982. I started with them through a group
policy via Bell Canada, and when I left Bell, they continued to provide
coverage. You can call them at (800) 268-2620.
Good luck,
Paul
PS Did you anything from the Triumph Club? I haven't.

Maniacs . . .
I just received a registered letter from my insurance broker, stating that
their underwriter has determined that "the 1970 Marcos is actually a British
racing car and they are unable to renew the policy." Wow! And these guys
have been insuring my 'racing car' for the last 7 years. I don't know
whether they have my car confused with the Mantis XP, or with the 1990's
Mantis. Anyhow, this should make for some entertaining correspondence this
winter, as I try to explain things to them. However, it's an insurance
company, so my chances of prevailing are probably between zip and nil.
Canadian Marcos owners: please let me know who you're insured with (broker /
insurance company), as I may be looking for a new insurer. Thanks.
