You can download a free testing program call Xbench. I ran these tests ...

Mac G4/400 (AGP graphics) .... 61
Mac G4/ with sonnet 1.2 ...........128 (those cards go for $265 now)
Mac G5/dual 1.8........................185 (disappointing)

My iMac came in at 65.53

Why do you consider 185 disappointing?

I used to have a G4 400 Gigabit and my G5 Dual 1.8 is about 8 times
more capable in the real world. Xbench is a poor indicator of actual
performance.

Which imac? The original 233 mhz g3, or the 1.6 ghz g5?

Why do you consider 185 disappointing?

As the other fellow said, these things are to be taken with a grain of salt.. or even a good sized hill of salt. But I was disappointed that $265 gives me a 100% increase, but $1800 only gives me 50% additional improvement. The benchmarks are clearly not taking into account the dual processors.

One tidbit that I learned from inspecting the reports was that the g4/400 had a level 1 and 2 caches, but the g4/1.2 7455 had three caches of different sizes. So its not just a matter of cranking the speed up on these chips, within the G4 family, there were evidently archetecture changes.

Hey Kamm, you're a good programmer. Maybe you can write a Kbench that will do audio tests ... read from 20-40 audio tracks in real time, do some heavy real time computations like done by soft synths, etc.

800MHz G4 17" iMac

Okay, I can see how that might raise your blood pressure a bit.

Hmmm. Good idea, then I can tell all my friends that *I* have the fastest
computer. :)

Benchmarks aside, how is Logic doing for you on your new G5? I truly hope
that things are going better now. I know you've been a bit peeved with Logic
on our old Mac.

By-the-way, I just ordered a Motu 828mkII and am hoping it will cure a few
audio problems I'm having. It appears to be the perfect replacement for my
Mackie 1202 VLZ. Once Tiger comes out and Logic owners confirm that Logic
runs okay on Tiger, I'll be buying a new Mac. It is still up in the air as
to whether that will be a G5 iMac or Dual CPU Power Mac.

I don't yet. I've been spending hours installing, registering, copying over and repairing permissions. Its really pretty annoying that the presets for different plugs are saved in half a dozen places.

Hey does anyone know how to change the 'default song' for logic when you open it? I searched the help and it makes frequent reference to the default song but no way to alter it.

Well, I hope you're able to get it all squared away soon. I'm dying to know
how it all works together.

I believe that if you create a song named "AutoLoad" and put it in the

~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Song Templates (from memory, could be
slightly off)

Directory that it will become the default song when Logic starts up. At
least that works for my system.
