Macbook Air or Macbook Pro?

Macbook Air or Macbook Pro?

2011-08-17 by Norton, Mike - BUP

Hi,

I would appreciate some advice. I need to buy a new laptop for mobile
recording with Logic.

I wonder if anyone out there is using Logic with a new Macbook Air?
Looking at the new 13-inch, i7 models I think they are capable of doing
the job. The issues seem to be around the lack of hard disk space and
firewire connectivity for my Presonus firebox.

Is anyone using one?

Regards,

Mike

I am sure a macbook air would be the worst choice. Its lightweight
means that performance suffers.

While I agree with Mr Moore the fast "SSD style drive" inside the Air is nice and the speed of this machine is amazing.. Whether the rest of the hardware is also as quick I cannot comment having never owned one but playing with one quickly shows the Mac Air to be a very quick device and surprisingly functional.. I would think that for portable recoding it would be fine so ling as you don't want to record a full Symph Orchestra using dozens of mics & Logic Tracks etc. My guess is that basic "Club" recording or band recording should be fine.

The issue I would have is lacking in ports (only a few USB & no firewire) and relatively small disk drives however if it is only for portable recording disk space might not be an issue if good housekeeping practices are used... The new Thunderbolt port is fairly clever and there are devices now starting to appear with Thunderbolt compatibility so maybe when they really show up that would be a more valid choice at that stage.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
