A recommended MIDI interface?

A recommended MIDI interface?

2009-01-10 by mrorangebear

Hello all,

I've been using Logic with an AMT8 for about 1,000,000 years without any trouble at all.
My MIDI setup has recently outgrown the AMT8 and I need to add another 8-port interface
to my system. Since Apple doesn't seem to be interested in releasing MIDI interfaces, does
anyone know what they recommend for modern versions of Logic?

Does anyone have any favorites, besides the old Emagic boxes? Or any horror stories,
anything to avoid at all costs? My first instinct was to just get another AMT8, but I thought
perhaps there are other options.

Thanks for your time, and I enjoy the advice here very much! =)

Best,
Dylan

Just going off the top of my head here, but, M-Audio and other companies make all kinds of USB and Firewire MIDI interfaces. Perhaps something like those would work? Try a Google search.

John

MOTU has a couple of 'newer' midi pieces.

Many of these can be found on ebay or through a few MOTU retailers. My MOTU Midi
Express XT works well with Logic Express 8.

If you can pick up a second-hand Unitor 8 MkII, that you would find absolutely perfect -
as long as it will still run with subsequent Mac OSs - it works just fine here with OS 10.5.6
and Logic 8.

The only possible hitch - the Unitor uses USB 1, so any port you run it off will be slowed
down to 12Mb/s - but I have a dedicated hub for all my slow devices and everything
works well.

I have found, since moving to Logic 8, that I use my MIDI gear less and less. And for all
the film projects I have worked in the last 3 or so years I haven't needed to synch to video
with SMPTE.

Any questions, please come back to me . . .

Just to chime in here: I too have been using an AMT/8 (by emagic) and
it is the one piece of equipment in my studio that you just plug in
and it just goes on and on for years without any break or attention
being spent on it at all. Totally dependable.

I believe the Emagic interfaces worked with Logic to reduce midi delay or
jitter. So its probably best to keep them compatible.

Re: A recommended MIDI interface?

thanks, everyone, for taking the time to reply. i think i'm going to stick w/Emagic and get
another AMT8 (since i don't need SMPTE). my unit has been nothing but reliable.

(regarding MOTU: i used to have a MOTU Midiexpress, but after a few years it started
acting strangely. when i called MOTU they were quite rude and told me that since i
bought it used, they wouldn't help me - even thought the previous owner never registered
it. i decided not to use their stuff anymore... but i loved my MOTU 1224 interface... oh
well...)

thanks again!

MOTU Interfaces are well designed, cost effective and are stable and
cross-platform...
